Your Opportunity:

Step Up Step down (SUSD) is a voluntary mental health and addiction treatment program for youth ages 13-17. SUSD is comprised of a live-in program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). We are looking for an enthusiastic Child Life Specialist (CLS) to join our team at the brand-new Center for Excellence! The ideal candidate would help youth and families cope with the stresses related to trauma, grief, loss and addictions/ mental health. The CLS would support youth and families by providing psychosocial, developmental, and educational support. They provide therapeutic resources designed to reduce stress, help youth and families cope with daily routines and promote a health and well-balanced lifestyle. As part of the site-wide service delivery, CLS is responsible for assessments/interventions that support children and their families with coping & adjustment in the SUSD program, primarily once they have transitioned to outpatient services. This individual would be required to enter client’s residence, engage in community activities to provide smoother transition, and reduce rapid relapse for current clients. The CLS works under the direction of the Social Worker III and reports directly to the Manager.

Description:

As a Child Life Specialist, you will plan, develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate developmental and normalization activities including therapeutic play programs in order to further the social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth of children and adolescents. You will assess, research, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate play and developmental activities/interventions for children and families (both individual and in group settings). You will provide therapeutic play programs designed to reduce stress, help clients cope with hospitalization, promote development and independence. You will help prepare children for diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures through hospital play, demonstrations and discussions and introduce coping strategies and techniques to assist children and families during procedures. You will also provide diversion experiences and facilitate special events.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Child Life, Education, Psychology or other related field.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience with planning/facilitating therapeutic group programs for youth and families. Demonstrates ability to teach/deliver educational material to families in an engaging/meaningful way. Experience in prioritizing referrals from multiple program areas/units is necessary. Demonstrates ability to function independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates an understanding of Family Centered Care. Must have experience in data collection/outcome measures and program evaluation. Minimum 2 years’ experience working with youth that display emotional or behavioral concerns, addiction/mental health diagnoses. Experience in managing crisis situations, motivational enhancement, therapeutic milieu, recreational therapy is an asset. Program development and advocating experience is also an asset.

Preferred Qualifications:

Non-violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid, CPR, SPRAM. Experience working within Connect Care or other electronic health record system. Experience working with other interdisciplinary team members.
