Job Summary

The Sign Language (ASL) Specialist provides ASL instruction and support to children, youth, and their families to strengthen their ASL communication within family dynamics. The Sign Language (ASL) Specialist also provides ASL instruction and Deaf cultural awareness workshops to families and professionals. The ASL Specialist develops instruction plans aligned with the standards of the Sign Language Institute Canada. Plans, designs, and administers a variety of ASL instruction lessons and learning activities to meet individual/group needs.
This position reports to the Team Leader of the ASL Program. The Sign Language Specialist works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop, plan and support ASL instruction, which enhance capacity of non signing individuals and signing individuals to communication and function.
Job Requirements:
  • Courses/Degree/Certificate in Linguistics, Second Language Teaching, ASL Cultural Studies, Education, or related field from an accredited college/university; or
  • Completion of ASL Instructor Training from Sign Language Institute Canada; or
  • A minimum of 3 years ASL Instruction experience in the intermediate/advanced level of ASL.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Proficiency Interview certificate level 4 or higher.
  • Experience with technology-based teaching tools including teaching in the remote environment.
  • Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 BC Driver's licence with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).

Willingness Statements:
  • Will be required to do occasional travel, including overnight trips and overnight shifts.
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
