Description

The Library’s mission is to sustainably develop, preserve and make accessible UWinnipeg’s knowledge and cultural resources in support of teaching and research. It is a core academic service that provides the spaces and services necessary for students, faculty, and community researchers to discover, create, access and use these resources. Within the Library, the Access Services department is responsible for end-user resource delivery and frontline public service for 200,000 annual visitors.

The Circulation Assistant is a full-time continuing position responsible for providing the highest quality of public service at the Circulation Desk and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the library.

Responsibilities:

  • Checks out and checks in circulating resources to authorized patrons and renews materials for library users.
  • Answers general technical and directional questions for Library users, and provides ready reference assistance.
  • Creates, updates, and revises Library patron records.
  • Deals directly with patrons concerning circulation and account issues, refers complaints and broader administrative concerns to an appropriate supervisor.
  • Monitors library and computer equipment in public services areas, assists patrons with use, and handles minor equipment problems; troubleshoots problems and refers to the Technology Solutions Centre when necessary.
  • Carries out Library opening and/or closing procedures.
  • Prepares and fulfills requests for circulating materials.
  • Assists with the mending and repair of library materials.
  • Collects, sorts, and re-shelves resources, including Reserve materials.
  • Works on Library related projects.
  • Assists with shelf-reading and inventory.
  • Assists with general stack maintenance, including shelving, shifting, and general tidying up.
  • Attends Circulation and Library meetings, takes part in Library committees.

Qualifications:

  • High School Completion or acceptable equivalent.
  • Undergraduate degree preferred.
  • A 2-year diploma from a recognized Library technician’s program (or equivalent) would be an asset.
  • Two years of directly related library experience using procedures, standards and systems appropriate to the area.
  • Experience with Integrated Library System software.
  • Experience with OCLC’s WMS would be an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to work effectively and accurately in peak periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to accurately follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to do detailed work.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and adapt to change.
  • Accurate keyboard skills and the ability to use software packages currently in use.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned, which may include moderate to heavy lifting of up to 25 lbs.
  • Availability to work evenings.

The salary range for this position will be from $37,073.40 to $51,178.40 annually.
