Nature of the Position
The District of Sechelt is a coastal forested community on the Sunshine Coast of BC. It is highly vulnerable to climate change, in particular drought, water supply shortages, and Wildfire. During the summer of 2024 the District will be undertaking a review of its Official Community Plan and plans to engage with the public and other stakeholders about climate change, with the objective of developing a Development Permit Area framework for new development as well as policies for existing homes in wildfire risk areas.
In partnership with the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), the District is offering an internship opportunity for an eligible student to research policy and regulations in comparable communities and make recommendations that assist in the development of a Development Permit framework. The Climate and Wildfire Policy Intern will consult and collaborate with other levels of government in addition to internal staff to identify other policy or bylaws that could be amended to strengthen wildfire mitigation efforts in wildland-urban interface efforts. The Intern will coordinate and conduct public outreach and efforts to educate the community.
Essential Competencies
Applicants must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a full-time graduate or undergraduate program at one of the PICS partner institutions: UVIC, UBC, SFU or UNBC. Applicants must have comprehensive understanding of Climate and environmental sciences and the theories and practices related to wildfire and forestry. Candidates must possess strong analytical thinking skills; be capable of conducting thorough research; and have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Applicants must have a professional, responsive, and positive work attitude as well as proficiency in MS Office and a class 5 drivers license.
Preferred Competencies
The ability to organize and schedule work independently, work with minimal supervision, and conduct detailed research are critical competencies. Strong technical writing skills will be required for success in this position, as well as working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems. The capability to establish working relationships with internal and external contacts will be important to accomplish the goals of the position.
