Reporting to the Deputy Chiefs, and as part of the management team, the Commander provides leadership and supports the day-to-day operation of the Paramedic Service. This position upholds the principles of sound quality improvement, logistical and operational management, and provides input on strategies and procedures to enhance and implement an outcome-based performance system. Through clinical observation and skill assessments, the Commander determines training and development needs of paramedic staff, conducts field training, provides mentoring and proctorship as required, and provides scene management as necessary.

Qualifications:

· Strong leadership capabilities and competencies that foster a collaborative working style to coach and lead a growing team;

· Open and effective communication style (written and verbal), ability to communicate in a clear and professional manner with internal staff, the public, external agencies;

· Ability to influence, negotiate and approach situations in a tactful and diplomatic manner;

· Ability to communicate and encourage change that supports best practices in Paramedicine and operations;

· Provincial certification and AEMCA (Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant qualifications as an Advanced Care Paramedic) in conjunction with RPPEO certification to perform delegated medical acts as an Advanced Care Paramedic;

· Minimum of five years’ experience in the field of paramedic operations in the public or health care sector, or equivalent. Previous supervisory experience within a unionized environment, and an exposure to methodologies utilized in performance-based Paramedic systems considered an asset.

· University Degree in Health, Education, Business Leadership or equivalent considered an asset.

· Computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.

· Valid class F or equivalent driver’s license, as required under Provincial law, with no more than 6 demerit points;

· Ability to meet and maintain all requirements as set by the Ambulance Act and applicable regulations;
