Job description

This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Policy (Director), the Communications Specialist (Specialist) provides strategic, professional and technical direction to promote the programs and services of the Department of Finance to a widely diverse public. The Specialist plays a key role in ensuring that Nunavummiut understand the Government of Nunavut (GN)’s policies, programs, directions and intentions on issues relating to Finance in the GN. The Specialist is responsible for supporting the ongoing operations of the public service by ensuring that current Department of Finance services and programs are appropriately advertised to audiences.

The Specialist provides communications planning advice and counsel to the Minister and the Directorate Office, allowing them to respond more effectively to issues of public importance. This position is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the communications function of the Department of Finance. The Specialist provides strategic communications planning, crisis management, communications/issues management, event management and media relations advice to Finance staff, Deputy and Assistant Deputy Ministers and the Minister.

The Specialist is responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of the departmental website, assists with developing departmental presentations, assists with preparing speeches or statements, produces graphic design products (advertisements, annual reports, forms) and other communications materials.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized undergraduate Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Graphic Design, Advertising, Journalism, or a Social Science with a Communication focus, plus three (3) years of related experience. The following experience is considered required: extensive experience and successful track record in media relations, issues management, marketing, website management, graphic design and/or qualitative and quantitative research; budget development experience; stakeholder outreach experience; experience in devising and overseeing the implementation of communication plans – both strategic and tactical and significant experience in managing complex, sensitive issues.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
