ABOUT

Millbrook First Nation is a Mi'kmaq community located within the town of Truro, positioned in the hub of Nova Scotia. Millbrook First Nation also has reserve land in Beaver Dam, Sheet Harbour, Dartmouth, and Cole Harbour, along with other privately owned lands near Truro and Sheet Harbour.

Using its geographic location, Millbrook First Nation has thrived in numerous economic development endeavours within the past decade. Economic development projects include but are not limited to the construction of the Truro, Millbrook Power Centre, residential apartment buildings and a gaming centre located in Cole Harbour, and a wharf in Sheet Harbour.

THIS MOMENT, THIS POSITION

Under the direction of the Director of Health Services, the Community Dietitian will be responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating nutrition programs and services for the community that cover the lifespan to improve nutritional well-being, prevent chronic disease, and enhance personal management of health. The dietitian is required to be a certified diabetes educator (or eligible within two years of hire) who works in collaboration with the primary health care team to provide diabetes education, management, and follow-up to patients. The dietitian collaborates with the primary health care team to identify, prioritize, and deliver nutrition services. The dietitian seeks grant funding opportunities, prepares funding proposals, manages awarded project budget and activities, and conducts relevant reporting to improve food security in the community. The dietitian develops culturally relevant educational materials and resources for the community.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Nutritional Assessment and Counselling:

  • Conducts nutritional assessment to assess the risk and dietary needs of community members and groups.
  • Interprets and analyzes nutritional data including medical history, lab results, and dietary records.
  • Provides culturally relevant nutrition counselling and education to patients and groups.
  • Collaborates with the primary health team to support patient’s health outcomes and care plans.
  • Work as part of a healthcare team to provide nutrition support to patients with medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Monitor and adjust nutrition interventions based on the patient’s progress.

Nutritional Counseling:

  • Provide personalized nutrition counselling and education to individuals or groups.
  • Develop and implement dietary plans to address specific health concerns or conditions.
  • Assist clients in setting realistic and achievable nutrition goals.

Menu Planning:

  • Collaborate with food service professionals to plan and develop nutritionally balanced menus.
  • Ensure compliance with dietary guidelines and regulations in institutional settings.

Nutrition Promotion and Education:

  • Design and deliver nutrition education programs to promote healthy eating habits.
  • Conduct workshops, seminars, or presentations on various nutrition topics.

Professional Development:

  • Stay updated on the latest research and developments in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
  • Participate in research projects related to nutrition and contribute to evidence-based practices.

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of client assessments, interventions, and progress.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards related to patient confidentiality.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Human Nutrition or Dietetics
  • Successful completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship Program
  • 1-2 years experience in a similar position in nutrition/dietetics
  • Licensed member in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Dietitians and Nutritionists
  • Certified Diabetes Educator Certificate (CDE) or eligible within two years of hire
  • Experience working with First Nations is a definite asset
  • St. John’s Ambulance/First Aid Certificate would be an asset

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate for this position should possess extensive knowledge of community nutrition and dietetics, demonstrating a deep understanding of adult education principles. Additionally, a crucial aspect of the role involves having a general awareness of Mi’kmaq culture and the specific issues faced by the Millbrook First Nation. The candidate should exhibit the ability to conduct thorough nutritional assessments, provide effective counseling, and follow up with individuals. Proficiency in delivering nutrition education sessions that focus on awareness, prevention, and the self-management of chronic diseases within the community is essential.

Furthermore, the candidate should be adept at educating and advising patients on diabetes self-management skills in both individual and group settings. An integral aspect of the role involves engaging with the community to address food insecurity, including writing funding proposals and collaborating with community organizations to improve food security. The key skills required for this position include excellent written, interpersonal, and communication skills, along with flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change. The ideal candidate should demonstrate innovation in program planning, implementation, and evaluation, while also functioning effectively as a team member. A self-motivated individual who takes initiative will excel in this role.

THE PACKAGE

Salary: $35.74 - $44.97 an hour (based on experience)

Pension plan and Benefits

The successful candidate will be required to work from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Mon- Thur, and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday (Occasionally outside of these hours if the need arises).
