Community Safety Officer

- Permanent Full-Time

The RM of Edenwold is a municipality located just east of the City of Regina. It is home to nearly 5,000 residents and over 200 businesses. Emerald Park and the Great Plains Industrial Park form part of the RM of Edenwold along with over 20 other residential and commercial subdivisions. There are four major highways that intersect in the municipality including the No. 1 Highway and a segment of the new Regina Bypass. The RM of Edenwold is home to a wide range of land uses associated with both rural and urban environments. The diversity in the municipality presents unique and interesting challenges. The RM of Edenwold is accepting applications for the position of permanent full-time Community Safety Officer.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enforce municipal bylaws such as Traffic Bylaws, Animal Control Bylaw, and other bylaws as required;
  • Inspect properties, take pictures, documenting and reporting;
  • Issue Orders and/or fines as needed to achieve bylaw compliance;
  • Educate the public about different bylaws, provincial statutes and infractions;
  • Enforcement of various Provincial Acts such as Traffic Safety Act, Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act, Highways and Transportation Act, Environmental Management and Protection Act, All-Terrain Vehicle Act, Snowmobile Act, etc.;
  • Enforcement will include using radar speed measurement technology or weight measurement scales;
  • Conduct traffic stops on vehicles, ATVs, or snowmobiles and issue tickets or warnings under the various Acts or bylaws noted above;
  • Coordinate with the RCMP, Rail Police, the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure and other agencies to assist with enforcement, notify pertinent agencies of upcoming safety blitzes, etc.;
  • Records management, Investigate and document situations as required and file investigations accordingly;
  • Prepare files for court and appear and give evidence in court when required (unpaid bylaw and Summary Offence tickets);
  • Receive complaints from the public and answer bylaw inquiries;
  • Must be willing to carry OC Spray, expandable baton and handcuffs; and
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures and manage all records and files in a responsible and accountable manner.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The ideal candidate must be able to successfully receive and maintain a Special Constable appointment from the Ministry of Corrections and Policing which includes a requirement to meet the standards for the Saskatchewan Police College in Control Tactics, OC Spray and Defensive Baton, and maintain this qualification every three (3) years.
  • Grade 12 education required.
  • Must hold a valid class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license and provide a

satisfactory driver’s abstract.

  • Typically, the knowledge, skills and experience required to be successful in this position would have been obtained through successful completion of one (1) of following:

o Saskatchewan Ministry of Corrections and Policing Community Safety Officer Induction course; or

o Saskatchewan Polytechnic Institute Aboriginal Police Prep Program (with Traffic and Control Tactics Training complete); or

o Previous or recent (within 3 years) experience as a Canadian police officer, or similar law enforcement background or role (at the discretion of the Ministry of Corrections and Policing); or

o Studies or experience in the field of law/security. (Must pass CSO Induction Course post-hire if selected from this group).

  • Successful completion of Control Tactics to the standards for the Saskatchewan Police College, to be recertified as required.
  • Must be able to pass the Sheriffs Officer Physical Abilities Test (SOPAT).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications.
  • Experience and understanding in respectful communications and de-escalation conflict resolution techniques is considered as asset.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and AED training is considered an asset. Successful candidates must pass First Aid and AED prior to end of probation period.
  • Clear Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector query.

WAGES & BENEFITS:

  • The RM of Edenwold offers competitive wages and benefits package based on education, qualifications and relevant experience; and
  • Determination of wage will be based on proven years of experience.

WAGE:

  • Wage: $30.00 - $35.00/hour
