Purpose and General Description:

Are you passionate about conserving some of Halifax’s most important natural spaces? Do you want to have a positive, lasting impact on nature? Are you looking for a well-rounded position to kick-start your conservation career with hands-on experience? We want to hear from you!

NCC is looking for a passionate person to join the Halifax stewardship team as a Stewardship Intern. Working closely with NCC’s Coordinator of Conservation Biology, this internship position will help the stewardship team conduct fieldwork in Halifax, process field data, and prepare reports. There are also opportunities to work closely with partner organizations, local stewards, and volunteers. This position is intended to provide an inspiring, learning-focused environment for a junior professional.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate one-day volunteer workday events and outreach events held on NCC properties.
  • Assist with administration of the events including editing event descriptions, managing registrant lists, creating volunteer information packages, and updating participant databases.
  • Assist in developing communication materials and use social and traditional media to promote volunteer events and the volunteer program.
  • Compile and track volunteer metrics (event summaries, survey results).
  • Assist the Nova Scotia stewardship team in completing land management tasks such as habitat assessment, property monitoring, installing signage, removing invasive plant species, garbage removal, and maintaining trails on NCC properties, as well as subsequent data management and report writing.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Attributes:

This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills and traits:
  • Enthusiastic about conserving nature;
  • Adaptable/ flexible with day-to-day plans;
  • Comfortable hiking/working in remote wilderness locations without trails (dense forest with black flies / ticks etc.) for extended periods in various weather;
  • Enjoys working as part of a team, and has a sense of humour, compassionate, good-natured, positive attitude;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to interact with the public to convey a conservation message, and comfortable speaking to groups as well as the media, familiarity with social media (Facebook, etc.).
  • Clear, professional and thoughtful communicator to landowners, public, colleagues;
  • Reliable, punctual, and responsible;
  • Willingness to learn and follow protocols;
  • Self-motivated to work independently;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient with data management and spreadsheet software;
  • Physical work will be required (e.g., strenuous hiking, carrying a heavy backpack, etc.);
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to rent a vehicle (must be at least 21 years old) and comfort driving on highways and rough roads.
  • Photography skills
  • Current Wilderness or Standard First Aid training is a strong asset.

Terms of Employment:

  • Subject to funding, this is a 17 week position from May 6, 2024, until August 30, 2024;
  • Compensation: $19.00/hour;
  • The position will be based in Halifax, NS with travel throughout the province for fieldwork, with regular overnights and weekend field work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
  • Regularly scheduled travel to NCC properties throughout Nova Scotia including frequent overnight trips and occasional weekends.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required but is infrequent.
  • Positions will include “office work” that will be completed in a work from home setting.
