Water Operations is currently looking to fill a number of full-time departmental vacancies in Dauphin, Portage la Prairie, Teulon, Carman, Morris, Deacons Corner and Grosse Isle. An eligibility list may be established to fill future departmental and/or seasonal positions in the province. Water Operations ensures safe and effective provincial water related infrastructure through the delivery of inspection, planning, design, maintenance, rehabilitation and construction activities. The Branch is responsible for the overall management of infrastructure inventory that includes drains, dams, flood protection dikes, diversions, bridges, culverts and pumping stations. Water Operations has a major role in flood activities and Water Capital Program delivery.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.
  • Must have a valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence (or obtain within 6 months of employment).
  • Must be able to perform physical requirements of the job including lifting, bending and carrying up to 25 kg.
  • Must be able to work extended hours and/or days.
  • Must be able to travel frequently to work sites within the province by ground, air or water transportation and be away overnight for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures and can be exposed to hazards such as construction equipment, roadway traffic, noise, dust, hand/power tools, fabrication plant area, moving equipment, insects, chemicals, vegetation and sharp objects.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Experience in maintenance and operation of water conveyance structures, bridges, dams and other water related works.
  • Experience in the maintenance and operation of power tools, pumps, chainsaws and small equipment associated with various phases of construction.
  • Knowledge of general construction specifications, procedures and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Regulations and safe work procedures.
  • Strong leadership skills and decision making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team.
  • Verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Written communication skills with the ability to prepare and complete various reports and forms.
Desired:
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience providing onsite project supervision.

Duties:
The Construction Lead Hand (CLH) reports to the Superintendent, the incumbent provides onsite supervision of assigned projects and performs various semi-skilled duties relating to the maintenance, construction, and operational duties on provincial dams and waterways.
