Position Overview

International Student Services in Student Enrolment Services is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Coordinator for approximately 2 years.

The Coordinator, Off-Campus Housing and Settlement Support reports to the Manager, International Student Services with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Manager, Housing Services (Ancillary Services). The Coordinator will join a team of innovative and compassionate student services professionals who provide services and programs that contribute to student thriving at UCalgary. Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 but occasional evenings and weekends are required, particularly during peak periods.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Deliver settlement advising to both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Provide accurate and timely information, work to maintain currency of knowledge related to Housing and Settlement Support services.
  • Assist students with understanding complex information including government regulations, landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities, lease agreements etc.
  • Identify students who may be encountering barriers to success and/or difficult transition issues and connect them with existing resources on campus.
  • Support development and delivery of pre-arrival educational materials and workshops, and extended transition support programming, with emphasis on supporting new undergraduate and graduate students (within first year of study in Canada/at UCalgary).
  • Coordinate and provide oversight of the Welcome Centre, including recruitment, selection and onboarding of student staff.
  • Track and manage volunteers, including managing risk related processes, for student volunteers who support programming.
  • Build and maintain a referral network of on-campus and external services to support students in their transition to study in Calgary.
  • Work with on-campus and local partners to communicate comprehensive off-campus housing resources and options to UCalgary students.
  • In consultation with marketing and communications colleagues in SES and Ancillary Services, create communications strategy for supporting students in understanding and navigating housing options and the rental market in Calgary.
  • Source and review alternative housing providers (hotels, seniors organizations, homestay or home share options etc) with the goal of establishing and connecting UCalgary students to a comprehensive variety of viable housing options.
  • Develop resources and tools to support students in their housing search.
  • Offer 1:1 advising as required to students experiencing difficulty in finding appropriate housing.
  • In collaboration with the student conduct office, support students experiencing conflict in their off-campus housing setting through the provision of training, facilitating roommate agreements, roommate mediation, and development of roommate resources.
  • Develop and implement programming that facilitates potential roommate connections for students.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree (bachelors level) is required.
  • Experience advising students, with preference given to candidates who have experience supporting international students.
  • Strong, engaging communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate complex information to both students and staff.
  • Demonstrated strengths in public speaking and workshop facilitation.
  • Skilled in problem solving, and effectively works collaboratively with others to resolve complex or systemic issues as identified.
  • Strong inter-cultural competence and demonstrated effectiveness in communicating with diverse groups.
  • Experience in program development and designing and delivering workshops for a student audience.
  • Demonstrates emotional regulation and the ability to manage conflict and enact de-escalation techniques as required.
  • Experience in program assessment/evaluation.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative cross-functional and team setting.
  • Volunteer management an asset.
  • Multiple languages spoken fluently (in addition to English) an asset.
