Job Summary
Innovative opportunity to increase citizen access to justice.
Family Justice Services Division (FJSD) delivers programs and services that promote the timely and just resolution of family disputes within a comprehensive family justice system. Through community-based Justice Access Centres and Family Justice Centres, FJSD provides various in person and virtual programs and services, including initial needs determination, dispute resolution, Section 211 Family Law Act reports, and Parenting After Separation online courses.
MELS is also responsible for liaison with and provides policy and budget support for the BC Family Maintenance Agency (providing information, enrollment, case management, administrative and court enforcement, financial disbursement and system support services for over 44,000 court orders and agreements enrolled in the program).
The Justice Interviewer (JI) provides initial needs determination, information, referral, and other related services to clients seeking to access the justice system. The JI elicits, verifies, and ascertains information from clients at the point of initial contact, including screening for dynamics of family violence or issues requiring urgent attention. Based on this information, the JI assists the client in assessing options and makes referrals to various services as needed.This frontline position is responsible for limited case management offering either a brief service or brief counselling appropriate to the situation and may help to resolve a case or issue in its entirety. These services are essential in ensuring that citizens receive information they need to make informed decisions and resolve disputes quickly.
Job Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field such as social sciences, paralegal, or dispute resolution with a minimum of six months related work or volunteer experience in a human service field (e.g., Indigenous organizations and community services, counselling, community service agencies, employment assistance, dispute resolution, court services, legal services); OR
  • Two-year diploma in a related field such as social sciences, paralegal, or dispute resolution with a minimum of two years related work or volunteer experience in a human service field (e.g., Indigenous organizations and community services, counselling, community service agencies, employment assistance, dispute resolution, court services, legal services); OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
  • Sixmonths or more experience working with families in a human service field.
  • Completed one or both of the following online courses:

o Family Justice Service in British Columbia online course - FAMJ-1000 (formerly FAM190 or CORR606), Justice Institute of BC.
o Family Violence: Impact on Separation and Divorce online course - FAMJ-1002 (formerly FAM191 or CORR605), Justice Institute of BC.
  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations status or non-status, Inuit and/or Metis), with the required combination of education and experience.

Willingness Statements/Provisos:
  • Required to deliver service by phone using a telephone/software system and in person (office setting).
  • Potential for receiving information related to significant family conflict, threat of violence, or child neglect or abuse.
  • Willingness to travel is a requirement of the Courtenay position, which may include regular itinerant service delivery to Campbell River and Port Alberni one or more days per week, and transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements.
