Job Summary
The BC Prosecution Service is seeking an innovative and dynamic leader to fill the role of Fraser Regional Crown Counsel.
The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) helps protect society by independently, effectively, and fairly conducting prosecutions and appeals at all levels of court. The BCPS is divided into five regions - North, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island-Powell River. There are criminal appeals and special prosecutions offices in Vancouver and Victoria. Provincial Headquarters is in Victoria.
BCPS Crown Counsel pre-approve charges and prosecute offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes, in accordance with BCPS policies and the Crown Counsel Act.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General (ADAG), Regional Crown Counsel are responsible for the effective and efficient management of resources within an assigned geographic region, including decisions regarding administrative and budgetary matters, ensuring alignment with government and BCPS policies and procedures. As members of the Management Committee, Regional Crown Counsel also play a critical role in determining the plans, policies, programs, organization, and strategic direction of the BCPS.
The Regional Crown Counsel for the Fraser Region provides leadership and direction to approximately 250 Crown Counsel (i.e., criminal prosecutors), paralegals, and professional staff and is accountable for the administration, organization, conduct, and management of criminal and quasi-criminal prosecutions and related matters within the region.
This dynamic role requires strong leadership and excellent communication skills. Working within a complex, high-profile environment, the successful candidate will need to be able to organize and prioritize a substantial workload, often working under significant time pressure and with competing demands. The ability to develop strategies in support of innovation and engagement is essential. The successful candidate will need to work collaboratively with other members of the senior executive team to manage resources, balancing the needs of the region with the needs of the BCPS as a whole.
Job Requirements:
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar

Experience and/or achievements:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of call to the bar with at least five (5) years' experience in the practice of criminal law;
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in management, preferably within a legal office context, including as an Administrative Crown Counsel, Deputy Regional Crown Counsel, or reasonably comparable position in another prosecution service, or in the private bar;

Preference may be given to applicants who have experience in the following areas:
  • Major crime prosecution files
  • Wiretap applications

Provisos:
  • As a Crown Counsel Manager, will be required to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Travel is a requirement of this position.

Crown Counsel must be ready, willing, and able to routinely:
  • deal with disturbing cases, including images of child sexual assault and child sexual abuse;
  • deal with victims and witnesses who have been subjected to or witnessed traumatic events, including sexual abuse, catastrophic injuries, and death, or have suffered other forms of extreme personal loss;
  • deal with traumatic violence or death scenes including images of and evidence about deceased persons with catastrophic injuries;
  • manage sensitive, graphic, and highly confidential information; and,
  • be the object of negative public or media comment or criticism with limited ability to respond.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 1 or more days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
