Job Purpose

The Culture and Heritage Manager is responsible for the promotion, protection, and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Saulteau First Nations (SFN) Community through the effective use and operations of the Nation’s Cultural Centre. Having great knowledge of the history and cultural traditions of SFN, the Manager ensures future generations learn from the past and develop a sense of pride, respect, and understanding of local Culture and Heritage.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program and Services Administration

  • Plans, coordinates, and implements programs, events, displays and activities that promote SFN culture, traditions, and history within the Cultural Centre.
  • Manages and monitors activities within the building; schedules, coordinates, and confirms room/space bookings to ensure effective use of the facility spaces in relation to user needs.
  • Provides oversight of the daily maintenance of the Facilities; coordinates the maintenance needs of the building with Facilities Maintenance Manager to ensure maintenance staff participate in daily operations, preventative maintenance, custodial tasks and repairs to the Cultural Centre.
  • Collaborates with community members, elders, and knowledge keepers to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of cultural programs and activities.
  • Seeks and secures funding opportunities relevant to Cultural and Heritage programming, equipment, or events.
  • Works with local schools, organizations, and businesses to promote cultural awareness and understanding.
  • Acts as a liaison with Indigenous cultural groups and organizations, fostering positive relationships and partnerships.
  • Assists with the development of tourism initiatives or opportunities that highlight local Indigenous Culture and Heritage.
  • Contributes to the documentation and preservation of Indigenous traditions and knowledge.

Management of Program Staff

  • Responsible for the hiring and ongoing supervision of all Culture and Heritage Department staff.
  • Ensures staff receive a site specific orientation to their workplace and they are able to perform their work in accordance with applicable safety legislations.
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals with team members, providing constructive feedback and direction as to improvement; coordinates staff training to assist with performance of duties.
  • Provides positive leadership to all staff, encouraging a team approach, professional attitude, personal wellness, and good management - staff relations, always modeling best practices in this regard.

Department Management

  • Prepares records and reporting for all programs and services within the department, providing funders with comprehensive details on programs offered.
  • Administers the annual department operating plan in accordance with funding agreements and in alignment with SFN strategic plan. Provides quarterly reports to the Director on departmental progress in the above areas.
  • Develops and ensures adherence to an annual department budget and to monitor and be accountable for all program and service expenditures, completing appropriate reporting to funders.
  • Actively participates in the management team of SFN, attending meetings regularly and bringing forward issues for discussion and decision.

Other Related Duties

  • Participates in all SFN sponsored community events and/or designate staff.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary designation in a relevant area of study, or a combination of relevant post-secondary education, coupled with management experience will be sought.
  • Minimum 2 years in a leadership role, ideally with experience and knowledge of cultural program delivery.
  • Experience with grant writing / funding applications
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and history, particularly those of Saulteau First Nations; knowledge of Treaty 8 Territory and its significance to the Indigenous communities in the region.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, development and implementation of culturally appropriate programs and community-based service delivery.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, protocols, and best practices related to promoting and preserving Indigenous cultural heritage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with elders, knowledge keepers, community members, and external partners.
  • Ability and commitment to promoting cultural awareness and understanding within the community and beyond.
  • Ability to solve problems, make effective decisions in critical situations, resolve conflicts, and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to build trust, serve as a positive role model and maintain confidentiality.

Work Conditions

  • This is a management position, exempt from overtime; office work is performed primarily during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays and part days Fridays.
  • Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.

Salary: $79,250.00-$110,070.00 per year
