Who we are

The New Brunswick Museum (NBM) is Canada's oldest (1842) continuing museum. The NBM houses one of the largest and most comprehensive natural history collections in Atlantic Canada, including the areas of geology and palaeontology, botany and mycology, and zoology. The institution has a long history of public education in the natural sciences, which is supported through field and museum research in palaeontology, as well the faunistics, florisitics, systematics, and conservation of Recent species. The mandate of the NBM is to research, collect, preserve and interpret the natural and human history of New Brunswick and related regions.

What you will do

Reporting to the Assistant Curator of Geology and Palaeontolgy, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping to oversee the care and organization of the provincial geoscience collections, as well as participating in a broad range of museum activities concerning the geosciences in Atlantic Canada. The duties and responsibilities include:

• Under curatorial direction, managing the receipt, preparation, cataloging, and integration of new specimens into the provincial geoscience collection
• Maintaining and improving geoscience specimen records and databases
• Under curatorial direction, participating in geoscience field research
• Helping manage incoming and outgoing geoscience research loans
• Facilitating use of the provincial geoscience collection by researchers and other visitors
• Contributing to on-the-exhibit-floor support of events, classes, identification requests, and offsite lectures or field trips related to the geosciences
• Other related duties as required.

Work Environment

• New Brunswick Museum Collections and Research Centre, Saint John, NB
• Monday to Friday, 7.25 hours per day
• Weekend and evening work and extended periods in the field (days-weeks) in remote locations in the region may be required


Need to have

• Master's degree or Bachelor's degree in science (Geology)
• Basic knowledge of Atlantic Canadian Geology
• Experience undertaking geosciences field work with minimal supervision
• Experience interpreting complex scientific information for non-specialist audiences
• Ability to interact in a positive and enthusiastic manner with the general public
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
• Written and spoken competence in English is required

Nice to have

• Experience working with geoscience collections, ideally in a museum setting
• Experience using databases, spreadsheets, photo-editing software, presentation software
• Understanding of the principles of taxonomy and systematics
• Broad range of palaeontological interests
• Basic understanding of fossil specimen photography

Wage

$1,910.00 bi-weekly
