The Database Administrator, Junior position is responsible for assisting in designing, implementing, and maintaining complex databases in a client, server environment with respect to access methods, access time, validation checks, organization, security, documentation, and statistical methods. They will also be responsible for day-to-day issues, monitoring, changes and testing from a Tier 1 support level. On call after hours work will be required for this position.
Candidates must be able to work in the office in Guelph, ON.
After hours and weekend support will be required as needed.
Performance Expectations:
- Perform physical and logical database administration functions as required for application sustainability.
- Create shell scripts and SQL scripts for database administration tasks.
- Work with customers and other Third Parties (Application support, Architects, IT personnel, testers etc.) to support DBA functions.
- Provide appropriate resources and skill sets to support the DBA functions for the applications as required.
- Review with Customer change releases to understand the business and technical impacts.
- Set up and maintain Dev, Test and Production databases.
- Propose database changes to ease monitoring and administrative effort and improve processes.
- Document and implement changes to databases via proper Change Management methodology.
- Monitor and analyze database activity to proactively identify and prevent potential Incidents as well as recommend performance improvements.
- Participate in situation management of incidents related to database operations.
- Assist in collection and documentation of user standards.
- Research new concepts as required to develop innovative solutions to business problems.
- Ability to troubleshoot systems.
- Take direction from Senior DBA’s within the team.
Credentials
- Post Secondary Education in computer science or in another related discipline.
- Microsoft development and database certifications are highly recommended.
- Minimum 1 year of database experience in a client, server environment.
Required Skills/Experience
- Experience working with Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022 including SQL Server Database Services.
- General Programming Concepts and Languages.
- Knowledge of the SQL language.
- Relational Database Design and Cube Design.
- Experience working in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 development environment using the C# language.
- SQL Server Integration Services SQL Server Analysis Services and SQL Server Reporting Services.
