Job description

Design Survey Engineer

ABSA, the pressure equipment safety authority is delegated by the Province of Alberta to ensure that pressure equipment is constructed and operated in a manner that protects the public and workers. We are looking for safety focused, technical professionals to work as Design Survey Engineers in our Edmonton office. Under the authority of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Design Survey Engineers ensure that the designs of pressure equipment used in Alberta are compliant to adopted codes, standards, and Alberta regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reviewing design drawings and specifications of boilers, pressure vessels, pressure piping, and fittings to verify that the design, construction, and testing specifications is in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and Alberta regulations.
  • Verifying material specifications, fabrication details, and engineering calculations (both manually & software-aided) to ensure the mechanical integrity of the design.
  • Ensuring client satisfaction with the review and registration process by providing clear & consistent information and conducting reviews in a timely manner.
  • Cooperating and supporting industry partners to ensure Alberta codes, standards, and regulations are understood.
  • Providing technical engineering expertise to other departments and client inquiries.
  • Coordinating with other Canadian jurisdictions on national registrations.

The Design Survey department is a fast-paced environment as ABSA is responsible for the review and registration of more pressure equipment design than any other jurisdiction in Canada. Our commitment to customer service is to ensure all design submissions receive an initial review within 1 week of receiving them. To be successful in this position the ideal candidate will have :

  • Strong mechanical engineering technical knowledge
  • A desire to contribute to public safety
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • The ability to communicate technical engineering concepts to a broad audience.

As a Design Survey Engineer you will go through an extensive training process to become a certified Alberta Safety Codes Officer. To achieve this certification you will be trained on the Alberta Safety Codes Act and related pressure equipment regulations. As part of this training process you will also become certified by the National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors.

Qualifications & Attributes

As a minimum, candidates must possess an engineering degree or engineering technology diploma in a related discipline such as mechanical or materials engineering. Other engineering disciplines will be considered depending on the relevancy of the candidates prior work experience.
