As a Design Technician, you will be responsible for conducting detail geometric design for capital roadway projects within the City of Calgary. Primary duties include:
- Review functional designs, detailed horizontal and vertical geometry, and conformance with City, Transportation Association of Canada and Alberta Transportation standards.
- Design special projects such as street design, regional / 5A multi-use pathways, wheeling facilities, transit accommodations / queue jumps and intersection improvements (left turn bays, curb extensions).
- Design urban and neighborhood boulevards that accommodate active modes of transportation.
- Prepare geometric design for traffic calming measures.
- Undertake design of facilities for other corporate portfolios (for example: parking facilities and bus lay-bys for Transit, as well as access roads to various City owned infrastructures).
- Set grades required for utility vaults, manholes, etc. for utility companies.
- Check grades of new roads and interchanges submitted by consulting engineering firms.
- Coordinate with other business units to verify their project design requirements and delivery schedule.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in an Engineering related field (for example: Civil Engineering, Drafting or Surveying) plus a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in street design and construction and roadway design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D is required.
- Experience working with government or consultants relating to roadway/interchange design is an asset, along with any courses in roadway design computer software.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are familiar with City Design Standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Alberta Transportation standards.
Working Conditions: Office environment with regular field visits.
