Designer - Senior

Position: Senior Designer

Reports To: Design Manager

Position summary

Reporting to the Design Manager, this role will prepare truss/floor layouts and designs for various projects and assist in the review of design work and feasibility analysis of construction plans relative to truss/floor related matters.

What you’ll do

• Determine design specification based on blueprints and structural design needs.
• Produce floor and roof truss plans, layouts, truss design drawings and truss quotes using your ability to understand blueprints and customer requirements for specific projects.
• Communicate with sales staff and customers on technical aspects of plans which require clarification. Make suggestions for solutions to plan challenges or if comfortable with the customer, make changes as per customer specs and communicate this to all parties.
• Consult with colleagues and management when more in-depth analysis is required.
• Consistent delivery of high-quality, cost-effective designs to both our internal and external customers.
• Review project design and drive accurate releases to production and logistics.
• Record and expedite repairs or corrections and follow up to implement corrective actions.
• Review other designers work as part of a check system to reduce design errors prior to submitting paperwork to manufacturing.
• Mentor junior and trainee designers.
• No need for double checks, take full responsibility for the design of the project.

What you need

• Minimum three (5) years of design experience within the construction industry.
• Expert blueprint (architecture, structural and mechanical) reading skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of rough framing and the construction process.
• Command of local and national building codes, structural analysis and structural engineering, communicate and enforce adherence.
• Expert knowledge in the application of building components and connections of floor and roof systems and in the application of floor (I-joist and LVL), roof and floor (truss) systems and tall walls.
• Expert knowledge and skills to design floor and roof trusses, I-joist, LVL and beams.
• Superior knowledge of computer design software, preferably MiTek and iStruct.
• Strong problem-solving skills to resolve incomplete, ambiguous project requirements, errors or omissions within blueprints.
• Strong oral and written communication skills in English are required for this position.
