Job description

The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Regional Commander of North West Region is seeking one (1) qualified individual to join our Fort Frances Detachment. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide operational support to the detachment.
Note: This is a twelve (12) month temporary assignment with the possibility of extension. This position will be filled on a temporary basis and therefore there are no provisions for relocation, accommodation or travel (including meals or vehicles) for this position. Only business related expenses will be provided. Manager's approval required.
About Us:
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario. We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.
The Rainy River District Detachment has a compliment of 51 Constables, 6 Sergeants, a Staff Sergeant, an Inspector and 4 civilian employees and is responsible for policing the entire Rainy River District. Our Administrative Centre is located in Fort Frances and we have satellite detachments in the communities of Atikokan and Rainy River serving 10 municipalities and unorganized territory. A new detachment building opened in September of 2020 in Fort Frances. The District also has 9 First Nations communities that are policed by Treaty Three Police Service with which we enjoy an excellent working relationship and mutual support.

What can I expect to do in this role?

To provide operational support to the detachment by taking OPP/detachment inquiries and dispatching the appropriate service response. To provide reception and administrative support to Detachment personnel in the co-ordination and processing of administrative services.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.
  • 40 w.p.m. typing speed.
  • Ability to work 12 hour shifts in a 24-hour rotating shift environment.
  • Valid class 'G' driver's licence


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures, Adequacy Standards, practices and techniques, WHMIS

  • Ability to problem solve and demonstrate analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of and skill in computer operation and software including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to produce court documents and type correspondence; knowledge of or ability to learn specific software applications to enter, update and retrieve data/information and perform queries.
  • Knowledge of records management practices to maintain an organized, up-to-date records system.
  • Knowledge of community/social services agencies and referral process to provide information and assist the public.
  • Knowledge of relevant geographical area and skill in reading maps and to direct callers to appropriate agencies.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of office equipment such as photocopier and fax to photocopy material, transmit correspondence and documents, and maintain equipment in good working order, arranging for servicing as required.
