Job description

Director of Health and Wellness

Guided by MESC’s vision, mission, Maskwacîs Education Law and Declaration on Education, the Director of Health and Wellness is primarily responsible for overseeing programs and initiatives that support employees in fostering their spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being in a respectful working environment. The Director of Health and Wellness is responsible for building supervisors’ capacity to support their direct reports. Reporting to the Associate Superintendent of People Services, the Director of Health and Wellness will collaborate with senior leadership to ensure the delivery of MESC’s Health and Wellness programs and initiatives. The Director of Health and Wellness is responsible for carrying out MESC’s duties and responsibilities in alignment with the MESC and People Services’ strategic plan and directives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Leadership of Employee Health and Wellness Plan
  • Oversee the development, implementation and review of the wellness plan to support MESC employees' spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual Health and encourage healthy lifestyles.
  • Ensure opportunities, as determined in the wellness plan, for employees to learn skills and strategies related to Health and Wellness.
  • Ensure regular communications with management and staff to recognize, understand and adapt to the changing needs related to Health and Wellness.
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of the Health and Wellness plan.
  • Oversee the management and development of a budget for Health and Wellness.
  • Ensure MESC remains compliant with all applicable legislation relevant to Health and Wellness.
  • Remain abreast of the developments, research and innovations in Health and Wellness.
  • Leadership of Benefits Administration
  • Oversee the administration of the benefits and pension plans.
  • Oversee the promotion of benefits and pension plans.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of new benefits programs.
  • Ensure all reports are filed on time and in compliance with regulations.
  • Research possible plan designs and benefits costs to meet the needs of MESC employees. This includes analyzing the data to evaluate the efficiency and value of current benefits programs.
  • Leadership of Crisis Response Protocol and Trauma-Informed Practices
  • In collaboration with other departments, coordinate training to increase knowledge of trauma-informed practices in leaders and supervisors so they can better support their employees.
  • Oversee traumatic crisis response protocol for employees as required.
  • Employee Case Management
  • Oversee case management and planning for employees who are absent due to illness, injury or reduced work capacity.
  • Ensure that medical and all other sensitive personal information is treated with confidentiality and stored in compliance with regulations.
  • Monitors and analyzes medical and other leave data.
  • Organizational Management
  • Responsible for supervision, evaluation and professional growth of direct reports.
  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of Health and Wellness staff.
  • Draft and review human resources procedures and processes related to Health and Wellness.
  • Prepare monthly reports and budgets.
  • Model and promote continuous learning experiences through reflection, professional growth and communication.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Personnel Management
  • Supervision and evaluation of director reports.
  • Support the recruitment and retention of direct reports.
  • Recommend formal personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff) for assigned employees and initiate appropriate action to implement recommendations.
  • Communicate and enforce policies and procedures, resolve problems and address employee concerns and complaints.
  • Monitor and maintain records using the Atrieve HR system and other systems of employees’ work hours, overtime or compensatory time, sick leave, vacation, performance, and related information; authorize time worked; and recommend the approval of leave requests.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant field is required to be proficient in the role.
  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of management and leadership experience is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a school setting is required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • A background in workplace Health and Wellness is an asset.
  • Understanding of the Cree language is an asset.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Nehiyawewin culture and language.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and verbally clearly and professionally.
  • Well-organized with the ability to adhere to established policies and processes.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and organizational goals.
  • Ability to take the initiative and work independently with competence and accuracy.
  • General Health and Wellness knowledge.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and people management skills.
  • A high degree of resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis and reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons or facts.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with the use of technology and computer programs.

Salary Range

The salary range is $97,366 to $138,182 depending on qualification and experience.
