Job Overview

The Director, Strategic Planning is responsible for leading the design and implementation of enterprise Strategic Planning and prioritization across the organization, including assessing valuation and business impacts of strategic initiatives to keep financial investments aligned with strategic and business value while considering organizational change.

Working with senior management, and other stakeholders, the Director, Strategic Planning ensures the appropriate positioning of the organization for both the present and the future and oversees the collection of strategic insights and market analysis to inform, define, develop, and deliver on strategic plans. This role will define a strategic execution roadmap of complex and cross-functional business transformations, playing a key leadership role in the successful delivery of Wawanesa's strategy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and lead the enterprise Strategic Planning process across all lines of business and shared service functions to deliver against and achieve corporate goals and strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross functional leadership team to identify and evaluate key strategic actions to support enterprise strategic priorities, assessing strategic value and defining KPIs and measures of success.
  • Develop and enhance the governance, measurement, and reporting framework for enterprise strategic activities, including clearly communicating progress on strategic initiatives, risks, and opportunities, understanding organizational capacity for execution, and identifying dependencies and sequencing of strategic activities for the enterprise.
  • Responsible to establish a roadmap of all strategic initiatives and monitor and report on achievement of key deliverables, including achievement metrics. Ensure the organization has core monitoring processes and measures in place so it can effectively deliver on its strategic and operational priorities and achieve the desired outcomes.
  • Lead the development of strategic market and competitor insights, ensuring research is appropriately embedded through all phases of the Strategic Planning process and insights are communicated to key stakeholders.
  • Support enterprise budgeting and planning activities though leading and facilitating the prioritization of available spend for strategic initiatives aligned to strategic priorities and business case outcomes.
  • Partner with enterprise project management center of excellence and FP&A to integrate the portfolio of change initiatives (projects, programs, and products) into the broader Strategic Planning governance process.
  • Develop strong partnerships and relationships across the organization to gain cross-functional strategic perspectives and develop business line/function knowledge.
  • Stay abreast of industry, regulatory and company changes or strategic trends as they relate to the insurance industry.
  • Provide leadership to attract and retain high quality talent, maximizing employee potential.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of leadership experience in Strategic Planning or related strategy development role, and 10 years of business experience in insurance, financial services, or equivalent business environment
  • Post-secondary degree in Business or related discipline; MBA considered an asset.
  • A certificate in Project Management is required with Agile delivery experience as an asset.
  • Experience with strategic management/planning, strategy development, business planning or performance management.
  • Excellent business and financial acumen, with a demonstrated aptitude for broad and analytical thinking and the ability to deliver influential recommendations and initiatives.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills - able to convince and obtain commitment when dealing with multiple stakeholders and potentially opposing positions.
  • Strong focus on implementing practices that meet organizational needs and promote efficiency and value creation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey ideas in a persuasive, simple and eloquent manner.
  • Ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and high-pressure situations.
  • Proven experience leading programs/projects and delivering against commitments and timelines.
  • Knowledge of PMO, PMO governance and/or investment planning.
  • Strong MS Office skills and experience with financial modeling.
  • Completion of CIP designation considered an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as requested.
