Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Project Geologist, the Drill Core Technician will be responsible for supporting a large and complex mineral deposit development program on site. Duties primarily consist of collecting detailed geotechnical and geological data, and implementing a rigorous QA/QC program, while upholding rigorous safety standards and working as part of a driven geoscience team. The position is focused on a drilling program at Galore Creek, a world-class porphyry copper-gold deposit that is currently being evaluated in a prefeasibility study.
Overview
This position is based out of the Galore Creek Uhtlān Camp, a remote fly-in camp located in northwestern British Columbia. GCMC will provide travel from Vancouver to Uhtlān Camp. This role is expected to be working on-site on a rotational basis of 14 days on, 14 days off from June until September; work outside of this time may be completed at the Galore Creek office or potentially from home. The successful candidate would have a start date in approximately May 2024.

Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader; lead by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values of health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Newmont).
  • Actively seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards, resolve safety issues and work to mitigate associated risks in the workplace.
  • Accurately collect detailed geotechnical data on Drill Core, in the core shack or at the drill rig, to support geotechnical and structural modeling and pit designs.
  • Conduct geotechnical measurements and testing, including downhole tests at the drill rig.
  • Assist geologists with the collection, organization and shipment of a variety of sample types.
  • Safely move core boxes while utilizing proper PPE; loading and unloading core benches, and stacking core on pallets.
  • Photograph Drill Core, conduct QA/QC, and manage/edit resulting files.
  • Support drill rig management, including drill site visits and inspections.
  • Utilize digital logging software; troubleshoot data entry errors.
  • Operate small mobile equipment (e.g. skid-steer, forklift, etc.) in a safe manner following GCMC's environmental and safety guidelines.
  • Operate mobile equipment safely in close proximity of personnel, and in support of labour crews.
  • Work collaboratively, sharing information and knowledge with the project team.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in, or recent graduate of, a Geological Sciences, Geological or Civil Engineering program, or related technical diploma; relevant field experience will be considered in lieu.
  • Previous experience working as a geotechnician is an asset.
  • Previous experience working with drill rigs and helicopters is an asset.
  • Certification and experience with mobile equipment such as skid-steer or forklift is an asset.
  • Experience with digital data entry; comfortable with use of computers, tablets, digital cameras, and digital data file types and file management.
  • Strong computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Comfortable with basic math, calculations, and measuring.
  • Experience working in a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Ability to liaise with contractors and all persons on site in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to safely and comfortably lift 50 lb / 23 kg core boxes or sample bags.
  • A results-focused attitude and strong time management skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license is an asset.

Pay Range (Annual Salary): $70,000 - $90,000
