About Our Opportunity


Under the supervision of the Manager of Education and Programs, as the Education Liaison Officer, you use Core Correctional Practices within the context of a human centered collaborative approach to facilitate programs that target criminogenic risks/needs of individuals in custody to promote community reintegration and labour market attachment. As the Education Liaison Officer, you facilitate and deliver educational programs that respond to the education and employment needs of individuals in custody. You engage these individuals in the learning process while establishing supports in the community that will assist them in long term behavior change. Depending on the needs of the individual in custody, this may include teaching GED preparation, facilitating GED testing, delivering NSCC curriculum, resume writing and/or addressing literacy and numeracy challenges as well as facilitating core programs. In addition, you collaborate with the case management team to provide programming specific to the needs of individuals. Collaboration with community service providers is also an important responsibility of this position.

Primary Accountabilities


The primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Facilitates evidence-based programming utilizing a responsive instructional approach to address the risk/needs of individuals in custody.
  • Assists with program development, curriculum revisions, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Teaches adult education programs using a differentiated instructional approach to maximize the learning of individuals. This includes but is not limited to GED preparation and online testing, NSCC courses, literacy, and basic upgrading.
  • Collaborates with community partners to provide a continuum of programming post-release, maintains up to date knowledge on resources and community resources.
  • As a member of the case management team, provides input and aligns programming interventions to address the individual's risk/needs.
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as required including but not limited to maintaining all required documentation, program scheduling, updating statistical data requirements and JEIN notes.

Qualifications and Experience


To be considered for this opportunity, you possess a university degree and in addition, you hold a minimum of one year of directly relevant experience in areas such as program facilitation, educational planning and delivery, adult teaching, etc. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Familiarity with correctional facility operations and knowledge of currently accepted correctional strategies and philosophies is required. A working knowledge of JEIN (or other electronic case management systems) is preferred, as is some experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.
As the successful candidate, you possess exceptional facilitation, and communication skills which will allow you to provide effective programming. Your relationship and partnering skills will allow you to work collaboratively with Correctional Services staff, other departments, and agencies, as well as community institutions. Your interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to develop strong rapport with facility staff and individuals in custody. You demonstrate an attitude toward individuals in custody and the criminal justice system that is compatible with the objectives of the Department of Justice, the Correctional Services Division, and the goals of the facility. Your initiative, resourcefulness and organizational skills will allow to thoroughly assess, develop, and implement education plans and facilitate core programs that meet the needs of individuals in custody.
Candidates will be assessed for the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


This position has a schedule of 35 hours/week. May be required to work overtime on occasion.
The incumbent will move through the Correctional Facility to facilitate programs and provide support.
This position will involve daily contact with individuals in custody; as such, incumbent must be aware of behaviours and surroundings.
Dynamic work environment with some exposure to highly emotional issues or volatile situations.

Pay Grade: PR 06 - PR 10

Salary Range: $1,915.37 - $2,746.69 Bi-Weekly
