Your Opportunity
Under the limited supervision of the Associate Director, Recruitment & Enrolment Mgmt, is responsible for assisting enrolled and prospective students in selecting courses consistent with their educational objectives, and performs other related duties as required.

Functions and Duties
1. Assist students both on an individual and group basis with the selection of courses consistent with their educational goals.
2. Provide students and prospective students with information and advice regarding OC programs, prerequisites, requirements and suitability in terms of the student’s objectives.
3. Provide students with access to information on programs and courses available at OC with referral to reference resources for programs at other post-secondary institutions.
4. Refer students to other resources, information and services at OC and in the community as required.
5. Confer with students concerning specific academic problems.
6. Discuss career objectives and information with students.
7. Assist students with OC processes including facilitating admissions and registration.
8. Maintain detailed records of student interviews.
9. Liaise with other OC departments and staff including Student Services, Department Chairs, Faculty Advisors, Associate Deans, Office of the Registrar (Admissions & Registration), Learning Centres, International Education and Student Recruitment.
10. Remain current on OC programs, services and transfer agreements.
11. Participate in OC student recruitment initiatives on and off campus as required.
12. Refer students to Faculty Advisors for in-depth program information.
13. Liaise with external agencies to provide information about OC programs, services and support for prospective students.
14. Assist Secondary School Counselors in interpreting college policy and regulations.
15. Develop advising materials and tools in consultation with Associate Director, Recruitment & Enrolment Mgmt, Associate Deans, and Program Chairs.
16. Perform other related duties as required.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related area. A minimum two years related experience in advising students from a broad range of educational backgrounds. Knowledge of educational advising at the developmental and post-secondary levels.

  • Must be able to work effectively both independently with minimum supervision and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Ability to be innovative in the design, development and implementation of existing and new methods of information delivery
  • Excellent research skills with ability to synthesize data/information and develop/deliver findings and recommendations
  • Must be able to deal with people in a calm, tactful, efficient and effective manner that projects a polished, professional and helpful image
  • Must have exceptional customer service skills
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office, Banner and other complex databases
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning new skills as new activities are undertaken and changes in technology occur
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated initiative, creative problem-solver with the ability to exercise good judgment

Special Instructions to Applicants
Note: The salary range for this position is currently $59,951 (Step 13) to $68,505 (Step 17) per the BCGEU Support Staff Collective Agreement. The expectation is that the appointment to this position will be made at the initial step (Step 13 – $59,951).
