Electrical Engineer - Live Line

Summary of Job Function:

Performs the duties of an Electrical Engineer specializing in Live Line engineering and operational support. This involves providing support and technical expertise in high voltage electrical and utility power systems and being responsible for engineering aspects of the Live Line program. Work includes but is not limited to developing technical standards and procedures, preparing engineering assessments and safety calculations with respect to Minimum Approach Distances (MAD), Arc Flash and grounding and bonding. Work will be performed as part of capital projects, operating projects, and maintenance activities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide engineering design and operational support focused on Live Line engineering for AC and HVDC assets.
  2. Participate in developing Electrical Engineering standards, preventative maintenance programs, and procedures/guidelines relating to Live Line work.
  3. Prepare/coordinate electrical and structural engineering assessments and safety calculations including Minimum Approach Distances, Arc Flash, ground grid analysis etc.
  4. Provide technical support during completion of capital or operating projects and participate in factory acceptance testing and commissioning as required.
  5. Assist with troubleshooting operational issues and accident investigations to determine root causes.
  6. Maintain a high level understanding of Live Line procedures, industry standards, grounding and bonding requirements, and equipment including those used by other utilities. This includes being knowledgeable in latest technology and design requirements associated with Live Line work and techniques applicable to the technical and operational areas of both existing and future requirements.
  7. Participate in and lead internal committees as required including grounding and bonding committee and arc flash committee.
  8. Provide technical support, training and guidance to crews in the field as well as Live Line Specialist.

Job Requirements:

Membership or eligibility for membership in PEGNL. Familiarity with Canadian Electrical Code, CSA, ANSI, and IEEE Standards. Normally assigned to office, but is required to work in existing HVDC stations, AC Stations, generation facilities, constructions sites, manufacturing plants and machine shops. Experience in design, implementation and troubleshooting of electrical or transmission systems and supervising equipment installation and commissioning. Previous experience with Live Line work procedures and principles, insulation theory, grounding and bonding principles and statistics. Ability to use computerized simulation programs for modeling the electrical system and knowledge of programs such as PSCAD/EMTDC and CDEGS.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of seven (7) years from graduation, with experience related to the type of work.
