Emergency Shelter Worker - Casual On-Call

We're hiring Emergency Shelter Workers on an on-call Casual basis. Shelter workers are direct service staff working within a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week Emergency Shelter for vulnerable adults who need assistance to overcome issues such as homelessness, addictions, and mental illness. Shelter workers provide intakes, orientations, and support for guests entering the shelter.

What you’ll do

• Provide Emergency Shelter and gateway services for clients who are homeless.
• Gather information from clients to identify needs and risks, and then provide information to appropriate sources.
• Handle the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients' understanding of rules; ensure ongoing enforcement of policies.
• Identifies social, economic, recreational, and educational services in the community that will meet clients’ needs.
• Accurately record day to day happenings using the appropriate methods; intake forms, maintain communication logs and complete all forms required.
• Carry out inspection / security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Performs housekeeping duties such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, emptying garbage, sterilizing washrooms, cleaning, and laundry.
• Maintains connections with other agencies, professionals, government officials, and the community.

What you bring

• Post-secondary certificate in a related human / social service field plus a minimum of one-year recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel
• Possesses relevant knowledge about substance use, addictions, mental illness, recovery, the needs of individuals with co-occurring disorders, harm reduction, and housing first model
• Ability to maintain appropriate client/worker boundaries.
• Current First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or MANDT training and Food Safe Certification preferred
• Successful completion of Criminal Record check

Salary: From $25.05 per hour

Expected hours: 8 – 40 per week
