Barkley Project Group (BPG) is a small consulting firm specializing in project management services for clean energy and energy efficiency projects and other community-owned initiatives. We are based in Nanaimo BC and currently work with more than 30 First Nations communities in British Columbia and the Yukon. About the Role

Reporting to the Development Team Lead, the Energy Modelling Engineer is responsible for modelling energy systems, including system load analyses, community- and commercial-scale renewable energy (hydro/solar/wind), battery energy storage, and microgrid optimization. The successful candidate will complete energy generation and optimization models, community load profile and peak load studies, GHG inventories and analyses, and high-level financial analyses.

The successful candidate will make technical recommendations and provide expert advice to the project management and technical team for community-scale and commercial energy projects developed by the Indigenous communities we serve. They will provide senior review of conceptual system design for wind, solar, hydro, and other technologies, and support project management activities in procurement including RFP development and review.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Use computer modelling software and Energy Modelling calculations to produce preliminary designs of renewable energy, microgrid, distribution and/or energy efficiency systems that align with Technical Safety BC, CEC, IEEE Standards, and other relevant standards
  • Use community historical data and bottom-up analysis to complete community/system load profiles and conduct peak load analyses
  • Generate energy production estimates for system optimization and financial analyses for solar, hydro, wind, and other renewable energy sources.
  • Complete feasibility assessments for solar, including onsite collection of shading data and building suitability.
  • Present technical findings in reports, memos, presentations, and verbally
  • Provide internal and external expert advice to progress projects
  • Support procurement and RFP development by advising on technical requirements and specifications when appropriate based on role and project scope
  • Maintain property documentation and quality management standards
  • Manage relationships with multidisciplinary teams, sub-contractors, sub-consultants and stakeholders to deliver high-quality work
  • Provide professional development and mentorship support to others, including hands-on training and development of training materials
  • Identify and rectify deficiencies in internal technical and process standards related to Energy Modelling
  • Take P.Eng. professional responsibility of regulated practice for both personal work and that of EITs and otherwise qualified individuals
  • This position has no direct reports
  • Adapt and develop processes as needed to improve efficiency and quality of deliverables

What You Will Need

  • Professional Electrical Engineer (P.Eng.) or other relevant discipline licensed through EGBC or eligible for immediate registration from another Canadian province
  • 5+ years of direct Energy Modelling experience, including load profile development, renewable Energy Modelling (wind, solar, battery, hydro), and microgrid modelling
  • Experience taking professional responsibility of regulated practice for personal work and work prepared by qualified technical experts (EIT, MGIS, CEM, other)
  • Proven ability to verify the accuracy of models and model results with calculations
  • Experience completing renewable energy pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, including hydropower, wind, solar, battery, and microgrid applications
  • Experience interpreting mechanical, civil, and electrical design drawings
  • Able to quantify GHG emissions and complete a GHG inventory at a community level
  • Experience preparing Energy Modelling documentation and submittals
  • Experience developing and mentoring junior engineers and modellers
  • Experience designing and/or reviewing high-voltage electrical equipment and distribution systems is considered an asset
  • Experience designing or reviewing electrical protection and control systems is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of power distribution, switchgear, generation, and substations is considered an asset
  • Building Energy Modelling and performance analysis experience is an asset
  • Project management experience is an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset

Working Conditions

  • Remote work, in-office (Nanaimo) work, or hybrid work – preference given to candidates in Western Canada to align with onsite work, time zones and core office hours
  • Core work hours are 10:00am-3:00pm PST, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week required.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation pay range for this position is between $101,010 to $113,715 per year.

Extended health & dental benefits and paid sick time also included.
