POSITION: Energy & Sustainability Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director of Lands and Natural Resources

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time, temporary (position funded to March 31, 2025, with possibility of extension)

ABOUT LEQ’Á:MEL FIRST NATION
Leq’á:mel First Nation (LFN) is a small, self-governing Indigenous community located in the Fraser Valley.

We assert our rights as Stó:lō and Coast Salish people over our reserve lands and our Territory. We have a small but dedicated team of professionals that assist our community and leadership in achieving their goals and objectives. We offer a safe and positive work environment. POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Leq’á:mel Energy & Sustainability Specialist helps Leq’á:mel First Nation to realize its full regulatory, policy and business development potential and to drive initiatives that reduce energy and greenhouse gas emissions in the community’s built environment and contribute to sustainable, affordable and climate resilient community development.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Implement the BC Hydro Indigenous Energy Management Contribution Agreement Work Plan, including:

  • Overall project coordination, administration, including work planning, grant reporting to project funders and seeking new funding opportunities
  • Coordinate with building energy professionals to conduct Residential Building Energy

Assessments in Leq’á:mel First Nation and establish a Community Buildings Inventory/Database

  • Lead the updates to the Leq’á:mel Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) and seek funding opportunities to implement CEEP goals and objectives
  • Work with LNRD staff, professionals, community and leadership to advance critical policy and standards development under the Leq’á:mel Land Code, e.g. building policies, land use policies,

Leq’á:mel First Nation compliance and enforcement, building inspections, pathways for BC Building Code Step Code and Zero Carbon Step Code, mobile home parks, etc.

  • Lead Community Engagement around CEEP updates, serve as a community resource for Energy

Efficiency upgrades to member and tenant homes and on-reserve businesses

  • Promote inter-departmental collaboration on energy efficiency projects and opportunities
  • Promote and represent Leq’á:mel First Nation at regional, provincial and national energy efficiency events and peer networks.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND OTHER COMPETENCIES

  • Certificate, Diploma, Bachelors or Masters Degree in a relevant field, with subject matter expertise in the following areas: Building Science, Building Codes, Building Inspections, Climate

Adaptation, Energy Efficiency, Net Zero, etc.

  • Familiarity with building construction, building energy demands, and knowledge of best practices and innovation in energy efficiency
  • Knowledge of and passion for climate resilience, net zero, energy efficiency and supporting community transformation
  • Ability to connect with members, residents and tenants and provide technical support in advancing community energy efficiency objectives
  • Knowledge and respect of Leq’á:mel First Nation’s social structure, traditions, values, culture, traditional territory, resources, protocols, and policies.
  • Knowledge of Leq’á:mel Lands and Natural Resources Department, initiatives, challenges and needs.
  • Ability to collect, synthesize, analyze and interpret large amounts of data in a way that is meaningful for policymakers and decision-makers.
  • Ability to liaise with other professionals and to build and maintain positive collaborative working relationships
  • Very strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbally and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to take initiative, work independently while remaining accountable to work plan priorities
  • Resourceful and innovative with strong research skills.
  • Strong proficiency with computers, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Previous experience working in a First Nation is an asset, and/or in a busy office environment.
  • Experience with computer programs, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), Adobe

Indesign, is preferred. Training is available.

  • A Valid Class 5 Drivers' license is required. Must be willing to submit a drivers abstract.
