About the Role

LNG Canada operates in one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive areas, with a matching level of scrutiny and regulation. More importantly, we have a deep desire to understand and minimize our impact, delivering on a premise of clean air, dark skies, and safe habitat.

The Environment and Compliance Team Lead is a trail blazer and alliance builder. This person leads their team confidently into and through stringent regulatory relationships, as well as community and local industry relationships. They have an authentic empathy for the felt experience of the plant in the midst of our community; they manage the complexity and nuance of highly detailed and numerous reporting requirements; their approach is data centric and leverages digital capability for efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an experience environment leader to be involved from the handover to operate and develop environment compliance management system for their own plant.

This role reports to the Sustainability Performance & HSSE Manager, leads a team consisting of 3 direct reports (2 Environmental Advisors, and an Environment and Compliance Advisor), and owns several stakeholder relationships.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Oversee transition from execute to operate for asset Environment and Compliance aspects.
  • Work closely with external and indigenous relations to develop and implement an environmental non-governmental organization and indigenous engagement programs.
  • Develop and integrate the asset environmental management system as a component of the asset management system.
  • Oversee handover of asset systems from execute phase at Total Care Custody and Control (TCCC), ensuring that all environmental and Compliance requirements are in place.
  • Liaise closely with the Execute team to ensure all permitting, compliance and environmental aspects are in place for Operate phase.
  • Liaise with the Execute Environmental Compliance Lead to develop and implement the asset compliance management system.
  • Identify any design or construction defects and work closely with the Brownfield team to implement solutions and mitigate associated environmental/compliance risks.
  • Provide input to the asset risk register and implement associated annual work planning processes.
  • Primary focal point for site regulatory interactions (compliance inspections, information requests and audits).
  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Optimization, Social Performance and the Execute team to reduce flaring activities to as low as reasonably practicable.
  • Develop a comprehensive environmental monitoring and reporting program for Operate phase based on internal and external compliance requirements.
  • Develop processes and tools to measure and report environmental emissions/discharges to meet internal and external compliance requirements.
  • Put in place and manage environmental monitoring contracts to meet internal and external compliance requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the HSSE incident reporting and investigation process.
  • Assist HSSE manager with management of the environmental and Compliance aspects of the HSSE budget.
  • Provide environmental and Compliance technical input to all Operate phase contracts.
  • Develop environmentally critical element register as a component of the overall safety critical element register and interface with Maintenance to integrate into the maintenance strategy.
  • Assure/develop and implement asset environmental management plans, procedures, and work method statements.
  • Ensure environmental and Compliance input to asset learning management system.
  • Work closely with Operations and Maintenance to develop Operate spill/waste management systems.
  • Provides guidance and direction for flaring and emissions monitoring and management.
  • Interface with local regulators, manage site specific permit requirements and deliverables.
  • Support development and management of site and marine spill mitigation and response plans.
  • Provides support for environmental incidents including interpretation of regulations and follow-up with regulatory bodies.
  • Accountable for the processes, reporting, management, and improvement related to the following HSSE-CF elements:
    • Biodiversity; GHG&EM; Soil and Groundwater; Volatile Organic Compounds; Water in the Environment; Flaring and Venting; Ozone Depleting Substances; SOx and NOx; Waste.


To be successful, you will have:

  • Degree ideally qualifications in environmental engineering or science.
  • 10-15 years of progressive oil and gas environment industrial experience including management of environment offset programs.
  • Strong understanding of applicable provincial and federal environmental regulations in oil & gas production, preferably in BC.
  • Excellent reporting, permit application and Implementation experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience leading a team of environment professionals, coaching, and delivering results through others
  • Qualified environmental professional or equivalent
  • LNG project and or operations experience highly regarded.
  • Professional, pragmatic and solutions focused approach to risk management.
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively to multiple stakeholders with varying degrees of understanding.
  • Excellent people management skills.
  • Ability to work closely in a cross functional and multi-cultural capacity to drive continual improvement in HSSE performance for the asset.
  • Experience transitioning from CSU to Operations is considered an asset.

This role requires that you:

  • Live in the beautiful District of Stikine (Kitimat/Terrace). For applicants located outside of the region, you are encouraged to explore what Kitimat has to offer in terms of lifestyle including schooling, local amenities, outdoor adventure, and housing, to ensure Kitimat is where you would like to call your new home.
  • Work an office -hours schedule, approximately 40 hrs./day, 5 days per week, with flexibility to balance off time hours when required.
  • Lead a team of 3 direct reports (2 Environmental Advisors, and an Environment and Compliance Advisor)
  • Are willing to comply with LNGC’s drug-free and harassment-free work Environment and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Undergo a pre-placement medical assessment of your fitness for duty, a background check, a driving record check and Pre-Site Access testing for alcohol and specified drugs.
  • Valid Driver’s license
