Pratt & Whitney Canada is currently seeking an Environmental Specialist to join the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) team at our Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, location. Reporting to the Operation’s General Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining a robust and compliant EH&S management system. We are looking for a professional with proven expertise in managing environmental, regulatory compliance and sustainability programs with a high standard of quality. Your ability to partner and collaborate with different teams will be an asset to succeed in this role. Responsibilities:

  • Manage environmental regulatory compliance programs and act as a liaison for key regulatory Agency stakeholders.

  • Oversee special projects such as environmental assessment and remediation programs in coordination with the RTX Corporate Remediation group.

  • Prepare and submit environmental permit applications and supporting documentation.

  • Provide technical guidance to the Operation on industrial wastewater compliance and initiatives.

  • Interpret, prepare and submit environmental compliance reports and notifications required under Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations and in accordance with permit requirements.

  • Monitor and advise the Operation on current and proposed environmental legislation to identify emerging risk.

  • Provide technical support for, and advise the Operation on, initiatives to align with the Corporate sustainability strategy.

  • Monitor and report on Corporate sustainability metrics.

  • Manage contractor requirements for low and elevated risk environmental projects.

  • Support the Operation in maintaining compliance to Corporate EH&S management system elements, more specifically related to water and wastewater, waste, air, chemical, and dangerous goods compliance.

  • Develop and deliver Sustainability and EH&S compliance and awareness training.

  • Lead and support incident investigation using root cause analysis tools.

  • Develop and deliver presentations for/to all levels of leadership.

  • Complete internal EH&S audits and inspections to verify compliance to Corporate and regulatory requirements, and communicate findings and solutions to address gaps.

  • Participate in Corporate led EH&S audits and assurance reviews.

  • Complete hazard assessments and identify key control measures for risk mitigation.

  • Provide environmental support for change management, large-scale facility projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Supervise and mentor engineering co-op interns.

  • Provide support to the site Health and Safety programs including Emergency Response, Business Continuity , and Pandemic Planning.

Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in an Environmental or Chemical discipline, with 5-10 years experience in an environmental or chemical field; engineering degree is considered an asset.

  • Extensive technical knowledge of Canadian environmental legislation; Nova Scotia experience is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated competency interpreting and applying regulations related to environmental site assessment and remediation.

  • Experience interpreting and applying regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, including the National Pollutant Release Inventory and Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

  • Experience working on strategic sustainability initiatives, including monitoring and reporting on key metrics.

  • Experience with contractor management, including pre-job hazard assessments and work site inspections.

  • Experience in occupational health and safety management is considered an asset.

  • Experience interpreting and applying occupational health & safety regulations is considered an asset.

  • Experience working in an industrial manufacturing environment is considered an asset.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
