Job description

In the role of Metal Manufacturing Estimator within the Construction and Mining Industry, you will assume a pivotal position in actively seeking, securing, and evaluating costs for manufacturing projects of diverse scales, inclusive of responsibilities for construction initiatives as required. Your primary objective is to ensure precision in cost estimations, project viability, and overall profitability. This role mandates a profound comprehension of both manufacturing processes and construction methodologies, with a preference for candidates possessing adept project management skills. The position is based in our Nanaimo office in BC, to estimate work based out of the Northwest Territories and will involve some periotic travel to the north. Candidates keen on the Yellowknife location are encouraged to consider relocation and will be offered north incentives and allowances but is not necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cost Estimation:

  • Scrutinize project requirements and blueprints to discern materials, labor, and equipment needs for manufacturing processes, as well as construction or mining perspectives.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with engineering, design teams, and suppliers to compile essential project information.
  • Leverage advanced estimating software and tools to furnish precise cost projections.

2. Project Feasibility:

  • Expertly evaluate the feasibility of metal manufacturing and construction or mining projects.
  • Identify potential risks and present effective mitigation strategies.
  • Assess alternative solutions to optimize costs while maintaining project quality.

3. Bid Preparation:

  • Meticulously craft detailed and competitive bids for manufacturing projects, incorporating pertinent construction-related factors.
  • Collaborate proactively with procurement teams to secure accurate pricing for materials and subcontractor services.
  • Ensure bid alignment with Project requirements and specifications.

4. Budget Management:

  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers to formulate and administer project budgets.
  • Exercise vigilant oversight to monitor and control costs across the project lifecycle.
  • Provide regular updates on budgets along with comprehensive variance analyses.

5. Construction Integration:

  • Apply astute construction or installation knowledge to manufacturing processes, discerning potential challenges and avenues for improvement.
  • Foster collaboration with construction or mining professionals to harmonize project estimations with industry standards and best practices.

6. Value Engineering:

  • Engage in targeted value engineering initiatives to unearth cost-effective alternatives without compromising project quality.
  • Collaborate harmoniously with cross-functional teams to implement and execute value engineering recommendations.

7. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Uphold meticulous records of cost estimates, project budgets, and associated documentation.
  • Generate insightful reports for management review, spotlighting key cost drivers and areas primed for improvement.

8. Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, construction methodologies, and manufacturing technologies.
  • Integrate cutting-edge software and/or AI where feasible.
  • Identify and institute process enhancements to elevate the precision and efficiency of the estimation process.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree or Diploma in engineering, Construction Management, or a Trades certificate with a minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar capacity.
  • Demonstrated expertise as an estimator in manufacturing, coupled with a robust background in construction and/or mining.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of project management.
  • Proficiency in the use of estimating software and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving acumen.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Certification in project management (e.g., PMP).
  • Proficiency in Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry regulations and standards.
