Family Well-Being Nikmaq Support Worker

General Description:
Under the Sipekne’katik Family Well Being Director and Program the Nikmaq/Family
Support Worker will help identify the skills, knowledge for the healthy development and overall well-being of families. This position requires a collaborative approach through
Sipekne’katik Health, Social, Education, Elders and other internal or external resources.
(Nikmaq (nig-a-maw) meaning my kin-friend or relations)
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with families to develop goal-based family plans to improve overall family functioning.
- Assume regular caseload review, visit with families in their homes or other community locations.
- Work with families to build meaningful helping relationships to identify strengths, resources, challenges, and priorities.
- Work in collaboration with band designate, school, daycare, health centre and other professional in the community.
- Assess parenting skills, and assists participants with mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness through a range of practical teachings.
- Support children, parents and caregivers with learning and development
- Provide practical home management support, budgeting advice and assisting families to manage their household spending.
- Role model, coach, mentor and motivate families to understand the benefits of health and wellness activities.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date administration and caseload records.
- Attend court sessions when relevant,
- Assist in creating parenting, healthy relationship, personal development workshops for adults.
- Other related duties
Qualifications & Education:
- Human Services diploma/degree or relevant work experience and training in community service will be accepted.
- Experience in working within Mi’kmaw community and families with knowledge to resources, parenting programs, food bank and workshops.
- Experience and training in child development issues and implications of child abuse, neglect, and prevention.
- Knowledge of traditional parenting and other effective parenting programs
- Experience with Medicine wheel, smudging, 7 grandfather teachings and participating in sharing circles.
- Skill in designing and implementing parenting, healthy relationship, personal development workshop and new resources.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Preference will be given to applicants who Mi’kmaw.
- Strong interpersonal, communicational, and conflict resolution skill.
- Criminal, Vulnerable, Child Abuse Record check is required.
- Must be in good standing with child welfare for at least five years.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle.
Salary Annually: $55,000- $65,000
