Reporting to the Project Geologist, the Contract Field Assistant works closely with other Field Assistants, Geologists and consultants to conduct geologic investigations and sampling programs. This role will also will provide support to the rest of the Exploration group as needed in the field. This role requires work outdoors, potentially in inclement weather conditions, up to 75% of the time. The job can be physically demanding and it requires walking long distances, lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and helicopter travel. This role will be offered as a Fixed Term. This is a site base role on a 3 week in and 3 week out rotation. Candidates who self-identify as Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement will be given priority.
Main Accountabilities:
- Adhering to Baffinland’s standard operating procedures, and following the sampling guidelines laid out by the logging geologists, split, sample and pack drill core for shipment to an off-site analytical laboratory for further analysis.
- Aid the Exploration team in the processing of core by assisting with the movement of core boxes through the workflow of logging, splitting, sampling, shipping of samples and storage of core.
- Assist the Geologists on prospecting and mapping traverses with the collection and transport of sample material for eventual shipment to analytical laboratories
- Assist Exploration personnel with the preparation of sample shipments to off-site analytical laboratories.
- High school diploma is an asset
- Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) or Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) is an asset
- Ability to lift and carry ~30 kg of boxed core
- Experience working in the outdoors on rough terrain is an asset
- Some previous experience in core cutting is an asset
