We are currently searching for aFirst Cookto join the Ken’s Diner team. This is a full time shift position based in Schonsee.
Position Summary:
The First Cook is responsible for the preparation of high-quality food in a timely, efficient, sanitary and consistent manner. The First Cook must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure work environment, while maintaining the organizational ability to identify and act on job duties quickly and effectively. First Cook must be prepared to work as a team member in a dynamic workplace, follow all safety procedures, and have a high threshold for heat in a kitchen environment. Supervising and giving direction to kitchen staff and acting as Head Chef in their absence to ensure all Lifestyle Options standards and Food Safety processes are followed.

What You Bring to the Role:
  • Formal training in a culinary program or equivalent experience and knowledge
  • Five (5) years of experience as a cook.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Two (2) years of experience in food cost management, labor management, planning and execution of food services and special events.
  • Experience cooking for seniors an asset.
  • Knowledge of safety, sanitation, WHMIS, Food Safety Course.
  • Food safety is required.
  • Familiar with use of kitchen equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to follow and create recipes based on production needs recipes.
  • Portion Management.
  • Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
  • Able to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail.
Your Responsibilities:
  • In the absence of the Head Chef, is responsible to oversee the operation of the kitchen.
  • Supervise a team of staff in the kitchen including monitoring work for accuracy and completeness by deadlines and meal services.
  • Prepares meals within menu guidelines.
  • Assists in maintaining an inventory of food.
  • Ensures that the safety, sanitation, order and appearance of the kitchen is in compliance with all standards directed by regulatory agencies.
  • Assists the Head chef in preparation and managing banquets, brunches, meetings and other special events.
  • Order food supplies as needed in the absence of the Head Chef.
  • Conducts inventory in the absence of the Head Chef.
  • Ensure cleanliness and hygiene is maintained in the various kitchen areas including refrigerators and storerooms and that food products are rotated to ensure high standards of freshness.
  • Ensure refrigerators and storerooms are organized and maintained in the various kitchen areas on a daily basis and that all food products are stored in accordance with provincial regulations.
  • Assist Chef with scheduling.
  • Assist Chef with menu planning.
  • Strive to uphold a safe working environment and be Health and Safety conscious and actively involved in maintaining and improving a safe work environment.
