The Tŝilhqot’in National Government (TNG) is the official First Nations government serving the Tŝilhqot'in Nation. TNG is located in Williams Lake, British Columbia and serves six communities, including ʔEsdilagh, Tsi Del Del, Yunesit'in, Tl'etinqox, Xeni Gwet'in, and Tl'esqox. The TNG Fisheries Department implements range of a projects and activities that aim to advance the shared goals of the Tsilhqot’in Nation in fish, fisheries and fish habitat.

The Tsilhqot’in National Government is looking to hire one field technician for the for the fall of 2023 to assist with a range of fisheries-related field activities and related data entry that includes fisheries stock assessment projects and water monitoring. This is an exceptional opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of interesting field projects and learn new skills. We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in fisheries and environmental management and who are willing to work long days in the river in challenging conditions. TNG offices are in Williams Lake but there is the option for the position to be based out of Tsilhqot’in communities with some travel subsidy.

This is a 3-month position from September to October, with the potential for future seasonal or permanent work.

Job Description:

  • full-time/seasonal; 8-hour field days with day/evening shifts, overtime and options for weekends.
  • Participation in a range of field projects that include fisheries stock assessment projects and water monitoring in the Tsilhqot’in Territory.
  • Includes working in and around lakes and swiftwater environments and living in remote field camps, under sometimes challenging conditions such as extreme weather and limited amenities
  • Basic data entry and other office-based tasks during non-field periods.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Grade 12/GED equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (clean Driver’s Abstract will be required)
  • Experience operating and maintaining field equipment such as boats, motors, vehicles, mechanical equipment, etc.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to participate in periods of strenuous physical work associated with field activities and equipment maintenance, and handle adverse weather conditions.
  • Safety focused, eager to learn, good communication skills, able to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Basic computer skills (proficiency with computer/tablet) for communications and data entry.

Preferred skills (not required)

  • Demonstrated interest/experience in fisheries science or related field
  • Demonstrated experience working in remote areas.
  • Relevant training such as Valid First Aid Certification, Swiftwater Rescue Training
  • Familiarity with Tsilhqot’in Nation and indigenous orgs an asset.
