Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Fixed Plant Maintenance Superintendent (UG) to join our Fixed Plant Maintenance department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a one week on, one week off rotation.

The Maintenance Superintendent directs and supervises the activities of the Maintenance group and is mainly responsible for the activities of the group – including recruitment, planning, and maintenance expenditures. They also lead maintenance activities with other groups and departments to ensure needs are being met in a timely manner. The department is responsible for the maintenance of all Fixed Plant and surface and underground mobile equipment at the mine site.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Manage and prepare the Mine Maintenance Annual Budget.
  • Assure maintenance is performed to assure mine production targets are met.
  • Handle fixed/mobile equipment maintenance contracts with vendors.
  • Evaluate and recommend equipment repair and/or replacement.
  • Support, implement, and communicate Safe Operations, company policies and procedures.
  • Provide direct supervision to electrical and mechanical supervisors, planners and coordinators.
  • Develop and implement strategies for controlling, optimizing, and improving the efficiency of the maintenance functions.
  • Evaluate equipment performance and use the knowledge to develop and improve maintenance strategies.
  • Establish processes to collect and analyze data on fixed equipment to improve performance.
  • Manage training program to keep all mechanical and electrical maintenance personnel up-to-date in technical upgrades and/or improvements to the maintenance techniques.
  • Promote effective working relationships with all departments to improve the performance of the core business.
  • Work closely with the Mine Operations Superintendent and their teams to ensure that analytical results meet their business requirements in terms of timing and accuracy and reproduce the results.

About You

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Diploma, or a relevant trade, and/or Journeyperson Red Seal in a relevant trade.
  • P.Eng. is preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a mining/processing maintenance environment combined with leadership experience.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of open pit and underground mining is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in a fly in/fly out environment is considered an asset.
  • Solid budgeting abilities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with maintenance strategies.
  • General knowledge of warehousing and procurement.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural workforce.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SAP.
  • Familiarity with working in a unionized environment.
