Job description

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Food Service Operations Supervisorplays a key role to supervise all operations related to the dietary department at Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Nursing Home (200 bed long term care home).To provide effective people leadership and compliance to all best practices and evidence-informed practices across the Dietary Department. Perform resident services (dietary) i.e. preparation and organization of all foods cooked for residents, staff and visitors. To ensure that portion controls, temperature records and production menus are adhered to on a daily basis and to work closely with the Manager of Support Services in monitoring, implementing and evaluating all dietary operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead training and orientation for new employees within the dietary department.
  • Ensure staff complete annual continuing education and training.
  • Provides oversight and liaisons with the Manager of Support Services in completing employee payroll, work schedules, and maintaining adequate staffing levels in compliance with the CUPE Collective Agreement and Nursing Home Services.
  • Coordinate, retain and organize necessary documents for Nursing Home Inspection and Public Health purposes.

Financial Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and completes weekly purchase order summaries, cafeteria sales reports, and invoices.
  • Manages and controls resources and materials to ensure quality, adequacy of supply and cost control within budgetary guidelines with support from the Manager of Support Services.
  • Maintain standardization of recipes and portion controls to support reduction of food waste during all meal services.

Health and Safety Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee and implement department weekly and monthly cleaning schedules.
  • Maintain knowledge of current facility policies, disaster and fire plans, infection control and other programs that are required by the Home. Ensure that policies and procedures are followed by staff and updated and practiced accordingly.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and ability to demonstrate the safe use and care of supplies and assigned equipment required to provide service.
  • Provide a safe and clean environment for the residents and staff by observing safety measures, rules and by immediately reporting and addressing workplace hazards.
  • Complete point of consumption food audits to ensure compliance with Nursing Home Standards and Food Safety practices.

Department Related Duties & Responsibilities

  • Necessity to lead with trust, empathy and promise of confidentiality.
  • Ensures compliance of food safety, sanitation, workplace safety and nursing home services standards.
  • Responsible for cyclic menu development and planning special functions in liaison with the Director of Care, Registered Dietitian with input collected from residents, family members and KES Staff.
  • Work in coordination of KES Maintenance Department in monitoring equipment maintenance needs and repairs.
  • Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties and functions
  • Assists in food preparation and catering for special events

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Red Seal Chef certification is considered an asset, however other combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Needs to be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and with all related WHMIS legislation.
  • Completion of Food Safety Certification (or willing to obtain)
  • Experience in Food Service management, kitchen operations, ordering and scheduling
  • Strong ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to manage day to day department needs.
  • Possesses a positive attitude with respect to adapting, implementing and evaluating changes in the workplace to foster continuous quality improvement within the dietary department.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license and willingness to travel for work purposes when needed
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software applications and other relevant technology tools.
