Jump Recruitment is currently seeking dynamic candidates for the permanent, full-time position of General Manager for our client, the Mallard Cottage Group(Mallard Cottage and The Inn by Mallard Cottage) based in St. John’s, NL.

It’s as local to Quidi Vidi, a tiny historic fishing and farming village at the edge of St. John’s, as one could possibly imagine. Taking you on a one-of-a-kind culinary tour through the tastes of Newfoundland, Mallard Cottage is located in a clapboard Irish cottage from the early 1800s - one of the oldest remaining structures in St. John’s. Nestled in the craggy cliffs of the harbour, the restaurant is next door to The Inn by Mallard Cottage, where you will enjoy an authentic Newfoundland guest experience. Mallard Cottage and the Inn by Mallard Cottage are favourite gathering places for locals and tourists alike … you’ll know the feeling of sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine in hand, listening to the sounds of the fiddle drift in from the next room over.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
As General Manager, you will manage a Newfoundland food-focused and hospitality environment. You are passionate about food and look forward to engaging the local community to procure the highest quality product to create an unforgettable customer experience. You will manage, drive, and oversee all operational and financial aspects including people, culture, events and more of both the Restaurant and Inn. You will promote team development and champion a positive experience while also effectively communicating to get the job done. As the primary ambassador for the Mallard Cottage and The Inn by Mallard Cottage, you will authentically embrace Newfoundland culture and strive to create memorable experience for people through food, hospitality, and customer service. Key responsibilities include:
Operations Management - Deliver customer service excellence at the highest of quality levels. Maintain overall vision by executing business and marketing initiatives. Develop, refine, and/or implement clear procedures and processes that will continuously improve the Restaurant and Inn operations including identifying ways to simplify operations to help maximize efficiency and profitability.
People Management - Recruit, onboard, lead, coach, and inspire the right people to meet and exceed goals. Create an environment through clear direction and guidance where employees are motivated to achieve goals. Dedicate time regularly to provide an avenue for both you and employees to exchange feedback, gain insights, share knowledge, understand daily operations, and performance objectives.
Financial Management - Manage all financials including working to achieve and exceed established goals. Set and monitor sales forecasts and profitability reports. Ensure the ownership team is informed of sales and key issues. Increase sales through marketing and networking to enhance customer check average. Maintain budgeted revenues, cost of sales, labor, supplies, fill rate, and operating cash flow. Review monthly profit and loss statement and acts on all variances.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • Five+ years of leadership experience in the hospitality/food industry (other relevant experience will be considered).
  • Diploma or Degree in Business, Culinary and/or Hotel Management or equivalent would be considered an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships, manage, and inspire people.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills – transparency is key!
  • Results oriented with an appreciation and commitment to food safety and quality.
  • Ability to identify problems and find effective solutions to improve performance.
  • Financial knowledge to manage the budget effectively and maintain profitability.
  • Knowledge of Quick Books, Touch Bistro, and other financial platforms.
