Job description

We are currently seeking a qualified General Superintendent (Process) to join our Miningteam, based out ofLeroy, SK, Jansen Site the General Superintendent (Process) is responsible for overseeing the construction of a process mill building. Manages construction activities in an EPCM environment, including but not limited to contract execution, construction supervision, supervision of contractors and their subcontractors for assigned portions of the project.

The General Superintendent will be required to work as part of multifunctional, dynamic group that perform a variety of business-related functions. Supports and consistently reinforces HBJV’s core values, is responsible for complete field operations, acting as leader, coach, negotiator, and arbitrator. The leadership displayed by this individual is critical to the project’s performance.

The candidate will have the opportunity to work on the Hatch and Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project.

  • Please note this position is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance. This will be a camp position on a 14 day on 7 days off rotation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage overall job site HSE performance with contractors.
  • Oversees and manages all day-to-day job site activities including safety compliance requirements.
  • Communicates the vision to the team for project planning, coordination, sequencing, and site resources utilization.
  • Manages discipline superintendents and project construction coordinators. Develops objectives/goals of each assigned individual.
  • Fosters and enhances client, contractors, and vendors relations.
  • Ensure proper and effective coordination with HBJV Field Engineering, Site Material Management, Contracts, Project Controls, Quality, HSE, Common Services and Commissioning.
  • Supports and drives utilization of project’s initiatives (i.e., digital delivery, WorkFace Planning) and technology systems.
  • Ensure logistical interfaces and delivery of materials are properly coordinated.
  • Actively participating in incident investigations and reporting.
  • Assists in formulating and implementing the construction schedule in the field based on the contracts and contractors’ input, taking into accounts any elements that might impact the schedule. Communicates with Construction Manager, contractors, and vendors to assist them in working to the agreed project schedule.
  • Provides guidance and overview of superintendent, look ahead scheduling and planning. Reviews and assists team with developing planning and makes certain plan is communicated throughout the project team.
  • Provides input to the Project Controls team for them to be able to update the project schedule.
  • Ensures that work performed is consistent with the contract and will meet or exceed client expectations. Conducts regular inspections to validate that quality of the works is in accordance with the construction execution plan.
  • Ensures regular feedback is shared with subordinates, including timely completion of employee performance appraisals.
  • Reports problems/issues promptly to the Construction Manager to facilitate the most cost-effective solutions.
  • Communicates issues, events, performance, schedule adherence and daily progress to the Construction Manager.
  • Works with Construction Manager to identify and resolve personnel issues and construction process/SOP’s revisions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to build and nurture a positive safety culture.
  • Excellent management skills to effectively manage subcontractors’ performance to a high standard.
  • Able to multi-task and handle competing priorities while maintaining excellent clients’ relations. A strong sense of urgency and initiative, and the ability to quickly study and react to complex issues and resolve conflict effectively in a firm but fair manner.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with clients, contractors and HBJV team members and boost their spirit productively.
  • Ability to develop a high-performance team through supervision, training, coaching and mentoring.
  • Minimum ten (10) years onsite experience in a similar position + heavy industrial construction – SMPEI (Structural, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation).
  • Extensive knowledge of heavy lift and heavy haul equipment, means & methods.
  • Involvement in at least one significant project similar in size, scope, and location as the assignment being considered.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to act confidently and decisively to avoid escalation. Must have judgment to know when to appropriately escalate issues up the chain of command.
  • Proficiency with:
    • WorkFace Planning (WFP) principles.
    • 3D models.
    • MS Office suite
    • Reading, understanding and interpreting contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and project schedule.
  • Ability to assume responsibility.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the company and project team in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications / Training:

  • Working knowledge of SmartPlant Review (3D model) and SmartPlant Foundation.
