Job description

This employment opportunity is open to all applicants.

The Government of Nunavut was selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, Top Employers for Young People and recent graduates in 2022. With one of the fastest growing and youngest populations in Canada, Nunavut is a dynamic, vibrant territory, committed to becoming an even better place for future generations. As a government, we are strengthening our unique model of governance - one that integrates Inuit societal values, promotes use of the Inuktut language, achieves a representative public service, and collaborates with partners to achieve the promise of Nunavut. Successful applicants will enjoy a competitive salary, medical and dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, relocation privileges and opportunities for training and career advancement.

Reporting to the Manager Heritage Resources, the Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer provides GIS products and services to department personnel, to other Government of Nunavut (GN) departments, and to external clients in the federal government, land claim agencies, private industry, archaeological and heritage consultants and the general public. These services are provided to assist with the management, monitoring and protection of heritage sites and resources in Nunavut.

The incumbent works directly with staff or clients to define their needs and to implement GIS solutions within the available range of equipment, software, date and human resources. The incumbent also serves as a technical consultant/advisor for less experienced staff and other clients undertaking GIS projects.

The position requires strong cartographic abilities and ability to communicate complex technical concepts and techniques to a non-technical audience as the position requires presentation and project management skills. The position requires ability to use geospatial portals to access and retrieve spatial data as well as to manipulate it using geoprocessing techniques. The incumbent must have knowledge of Microsoft Office software, various mapping and database software, programming/scripting languages such as Esri’s ArcGIS 10.x and ArcGIS Pro 2.x suite of products, ArcPy and Structured Query Language (SQL), and geospatial data sources such as the National Topographic Database (NTDB) and large format plotters. The position requires familiarity with heritage resource terminology (Archaeological and Toponymical) and has knowledge in northern cultures, politics and environment. The position requires ability to work in a team and independently.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized Diploma in Geographic Information Systems or related field, along with one year of related experience.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position. We encourage you to apply if you have equivalent years of education and/or experience equal to the education and experience requirements listed above.

An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies
