Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.


The Mines Technical Services (MTS) team is integral to the success of the Voisey’s Bay operation to ensure we continue to be a safe, predictable, and reliable producer. The various disciplines within our team collaborate to ensure we provide reliable, quality data to support mine design, planning and production.


The Opportunity


Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.


We are currently seeking a Senior Geologist, Mid-Range to join our Mines Technical Services department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.


This position will work a Monday to Friday schedule supporting from the St. John’s, NL Office with occasional visits to the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site, if required.


Reporting to the Chief Mine Geologist, the Mid-Range Geologist will design safe, sustainable ore extraction at optimum value through technical excellence while meeting safety objectives of the department. The Mid-Range Geologist will provide geological services as required within the designated area of responsibility in the MTS department. This will include evaluating 2-year life of mine planned stopes and working with the MTS team to de-risk the production profile. Moreover, the Mid-Range Geologist will identify, track, and plan opportunities to add ore reserves to the life of mine plan, maintaining and updating geological and structural wireframes as well as generate localized block models. Collaboration with Mine Operations, Long and Short-Range Engineering and Geology will be essential for this role. Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Follow Departmental Safe Production Program.
  • Notify ground control and operations of unsafe ground conditions.
  • Evaluate 2-year life of mine plan to identify high risk stopes and develop a plan in collaboration with MTS and Mine Operations to de-risk the production profile.
  • Identify, track, and plan opportunities to add to the life of mine ore reserves.
  • Utilize 3-D software to generate localized block models and assist with yearly deposit scale block models.
  • Assistance with yearly Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves reporting
  • Maintain and update lithological, mineralized, and structural wireframes and provide to engineering.
  • Develop and update geology work instructions and safe operating procedures.
  • Develop and work with the on-site team on continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Audit of Underground geological and structural digital mapping and QAQC of diamond drill core logging and samples.
  • Communication with Operations and Engineering is essential. Communication with external sources may be required with some job functions.
  • Design, schedule and present the 5 Year Underground Definition Diamond drilling program.
  • Assist with developing budgets for underground definition drilling program, sampling/assaying as well as departmental budgets.
  • Oversee the configuration and implementation of new/existing geological technology and software.
  • Work with the Senior Beat Geologist on Quarterly and Yearly Reconciliation compilation and reporting


About You

Education:

  • An undergraduate degree in a Bachelor of Science (Geology or Earth Sciences).
    • Bachelor of Science (Honours) is preferred.
  • A Professional Geologist Certification (P. Geo) is required.


Experience
:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of geology experience in a mining environment.
  • Capable of holding/acquiring a Professional Geoscientist qualification.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Vale SH&E policies and procedures would be an asset.
  • Basic understanding of the relevant geoscience discipline.
  • Poses knowledge of underground drilling methods.
  • Experience working in an underground mining environment.

  • Ability to work and supervise contractors on a daily basis and develop working relationships with external personnel.
  • Concerned with the accuracy and thoroughness in data acquisition and interpretation.
