Job Summary:

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Geotechnical Engineer will assist with all aspects of Geotechnical Engineering activities for New Range Copper Nickel on open pit and rock storage facilities developments and studies. 

The Geotechnical Engineer will draw on broad industry experience to apply diversified engineering techniques to complex situations relying on principles and /or fundamentals of engineering theory to ensure practical solutions. The Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for the execution of field programs to collect geotechnical site-specific data.  The Geotechnical Engineer is also expected to support the subsequent geotechnical design of rock storage facilities and open pit as required.

The nature of the work is diversified and will require both strong field and analytical skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong organizational and task prioritization skills, the flexibility to handle changing priorities, and the ability to travel within Minnesota and to other locations based on our partners request, when required.

The Geotechnical Engineer will support the Technical Manager who is accountable for the delivery of engineering studies. The Geotechnical Engineer will also receive guidance from functional leads from New Range Copper Nickel parent companies.

Located in the historic iron range mining region of northeastern Minnesota, NewRange is a 50:50 joint venture of subsidiaries of Teck and Glencore that is advancing two major copper-nickel-platinum-palladium deposits, NorthMet and Mesaba. Project activities range from readying the feasibility stage NorthMet project for a production decision pending clearance of mine permits to advancing the nearby Mesaba project to pre-feasibility studies and permitting. NewRange is committed to unlocking a new domestic supply chain of critical metals for the transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Minnesota as a world leader in sustainable mineral resource development.

Responsibilities:

• Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners.
• The Geotechnical Engineer will primarily be responsible for development, oversight and execution of a field program for the area of rock storage facilities and groundwater containment system design.
• Other responsibilities will include:
  • production of scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, and other related mining project studies;
  • integrate rock slope design, rock storage management concepts, and surface hydrology into the design;
  • development of Geotechnical Engineering standards and monitoring plans to assess and manage site risk; 
  • management of project related budgets;
  • assess, identify, and communicate geotechnical risks; and
  • assist NewRange Copper Nickel in establishing geotechnical consulting contracts.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in the mining and/or consulting industry.
• Member of a professional organization that certifies the candidate as a Professional Engineer (or are currently working towards obtaining a PE license).
• Significant experience in rock storage facilities design.
• Experience with rock mechanics design for open pit mining (slope stability), geotechnical monitoring systems and tailings geotechnical design is an asset.
• Familiarity with stability analysis and deformation type software, and risk-based decision making.
• Experience in Project Evaluation at the Scoping, Prefeasibility and Feasibility to ongoing operations stages.
• Ability to build and maintain strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, General Manager, and Joint Venture-partner representatives.
• Strong technical writing, group presentation, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
• Continual improvement in understanding of the industry, community, and discipline.
• Strong knowledge in overall mining business and planning processes. Operational experience would be an asset.
• Work experience in similar setting as Northern Minnesota would be an asset.
