Alex House, as a neighbourhood house, is place based, and takes an assets-based approach to working in community. We understand the potential of each individual to contribute to the wellness of our shared community, regardless of what brings them through our doors for the very first time. We are seeking a creative, passionate, and collaborative Child and Youth Workerto work with underrepresented, marginalized, and at-risk children and Youth.

The Greenbrook Lounge is a safe, sober and inclusive space for youth aged 10-18 yrs to create, connect and innovate, by youth for youth, in partnership with supportive adult allies. The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) works under the direction of the Greenbrook Team Lead and requires after school and evening work. The CYW will work collaboratively with the youth leaders, team members, volunteers, and practicum students to support the development and evaluation of programming for middle years and Youth. The CYW will act as an advocate for young people's interests. Programming is intended to engage preteens and Youth in a social environment by offering interactive and supportive activities to gain life skills, social skills, and interpersonal skills in North Surrey.

Our work is centered on inclusion and equity, to build social connection and to break down discrimination through community building. Responsibilities:

  • Centre and engage children, youth, and family voices to nurture an equitable, anti-oppressive, and culturally safe programming
  • Co-create guiding principles for Greenbrook for group program development in leadership, social emotional learning, health and wellness, social justice, community safety, and engagement activities with an emphasis on building resilience, stewardship, empowerment, and creating a sense of belonging
  • Creating a closer network of agencies in North Surrey to support middle years/youth programming while addressing children's health holistically and celebrating cultural diversity
  • Providing mentorship for younger children by connecting them with high school and post-secondary students to model healthy respectful relationships and positive encouragement
  • Embedding BC Core Competencies into programming framework: communication, critical/creative thinking, personal/social and cultural identity, personal awareness/responsibility, and social responsibility
  • Honour the wisdom of youth and facilitate an environment that actively values youth input, passions, and skills
  • Liaison between adult staff, community partners, and Youth to ensure youth voice is empowered and implemented
  • Support special events at the space as needed (i.e. Sip and See, Community Safety Events, and Cultural Dinners, etc.)
  • Support onboarding of new volunteers and/or practicum students
  • Conduct outreach into schools, community and via social media to raise awareness of the Greenbrook Lounge, recruit new members, and promote activities to potential participants
  • Support the evaluation of activities and assist with writing reports to funders
  • Undertake administrative tasks: maintaining the Greenbrook instagram, creating and maintaining effective tracking systems, forms, and databases

Education and Experience:

  • Certificate, diploma, degree or attending education in Child and Youth Care Counselling, Rec and Leisure, Education or related field or a combination of relevant education
  • At least 2 year’s experience working with vulnerable children and their families and/or experience working with preteens and Youth in a social recreational setting
  • Lived experience as a 2SLGBTQ+, IBPoC, or other historically underrepresented groups
  • Experience working with youth volunteers, including recruitment and support
  • Broad knowledge and skills in Child and Youth development, behavioural management, program development, group facilitation, and program planning
  • Experience working with school staff and community service providers
  • Demonstrated skills in program and special event planning
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Cross cultural understanding and awareness
  • Additional languages an asset
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and/or Foodsafe certification is an asset
  • Clean Criminal record check
