Guidance Counsellor at Tsay Dene School in Northern BC.

Tsay Keh Dene is a remote community located in Northern BC in Rocky Mountain Trench in some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in the world.

Summary : The School Counsellor is a vital member of the educational team who provides comprehensive counselling services to students K-12. This position involves supporting the social, emotional, and academic development of students by providing guidance, counselling, and resources. The School Counsellor collaborates with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create a positive and inclusive school environment that promotes student well-being and success.

Responsibilities:

· Provide individual and group counselling to students, addressing a range of personal, social, and academic concerns.

· Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students' needs and develop appropriate counselling plans.

· Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to support students' educational and personal goals.

· Assist students in developing academic plans and setting educational objectives.

· Provide guidance on course selection, career exploration, and post-secondary options.

· Support students in developing problem-solving and decision-making skills.

· Assist students in managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.

· Foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students, addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

· Coordinate and facilitate workshops, presentations, and activities related to mental health, bullying prevention, and other relevant topics.

· Refer students to external resources, such as community agencies or professionals, when additional support is needed.

· Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

· Collaborate with teachers to identify and address behavioral and academic concerns impacting student success.

· Participate in student support team meetings and contribute to the development of individual education plans (IEPs) as needed.

· Stay informed about current counseling techniques, research, and best practices in the field of school counseling.

· Engage in professional development activities to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:

· Master's degree in counsellng, psychology, or a related field. Must meet the academic requirements for registration as a Registered Clinical Counselor (RCC) in British Columbia.

· Certification as a school counsellor in British Columbia, or eligibility to obtain certification.

· Knowledge of the British Columbia curriculum, graduation requirements, and post-secondary pathways.

· Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, mental health issues, and counselling theories.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

· Experience in providing counselling services to students, preferably in an educational setting.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in an ethical and professional manner.

· Familiarity with relevant legislation, such as the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

· Knowledge of community resources and services available to support students' well-being.

· Strong organizational and time-management skills to effectively manage a caseload of students.

· Cultural competence and the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

· Proficient computer skills for record-keeping and data management purposes.

· Sekani Awareness Cultural Week - school closed for 1 week in May for cultural participation

· Fully furnished housing (including bedding, couches, TV, dining room table and chairs, dressers, all major appliances)

· Use of school 4x4 pickup truck snowshoes, cross country skis, and a small workout facility.
