Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join B&R Brown Brewing as our company’s first brewer. The successful candidate will be someone who has demonstrated a passion for the art of brewing and has experience working in a craft brewing environment with production capabilities. This should be someone who is a quick learner, someone passionate and creative who is looking to learn more in the craft brewing industry. This person should have knowledge of how the entire process works from bringing hops, malt and yeast to the kegging and canning process for great tasting craft beer.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Previous experience working in a brewery is required.
  • At least 1 year of professional brewing experience, including production operation and fermentation.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Multi-tasking ability and comfort in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Physical fitness, as the job involves standing, climbing stairs/ladders, cleaning, and lifting/moving products in potentially hot environments.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, overnights, and weekends.
  • Familiarity with brewing software and ANBL listing and reporting processes.
  • Creative thinking, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Dedication to maintaining a clean and tour-ready brewery.

Responsibilities:

1. Cellar Operations:

  • Assist in transferring, cleaning, and monitoring tanks.
  • Complete dosing, blending, filtering, and mixing tasks as required.
  • Ensure quality checks and sensory checks on in-progress and final product brews.

2. Brewhouse Operations:

  • Operate the brewhouse with a focus on quality and consistency.
  • Follow recipes and maintain the quality of raw materials.
  • Manage fermentation processes, including temperature, gravity, and pH checks.
  • Handle yeast management, harvesting, pitching, and cell concentration.
  • Operate the DE Filter and manage dosing rates.

3. Quality Control and Compliance:

  • Monitor all in-process beer for quality and defects.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist in creating and maintaining SOPs.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance procedures and regulatory requirements related to alcohol production, labeling, and packaging, including responsiveness to the requirements of the ANBL.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations.

4. Inventory and Cost Control:

  • Estimate required supplies and control ingredient costs.
  • Perform weekly inventory counts and provide ingredient cost information.
  • Maintain inventory rotation and depletion procedures.
  • Manage costs by leveraging multiple suppliers to meet target cost range.

5. New Product Development:

  • Assist in the development of new products and limited release brews.
  • Collaborate with other departments for promotional events or product launches.

6. Brewery Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Keep the brewery clean and maintain a sanitary and safe working environment.
  • Perform basic maintenance on brewing equipment and troubleshoot issues.
  • Monitor utilities, such as brewing water usage, cleaning water usage, cooling system, steam, and air pressure.

7. Environmental Sustainability:

  • Implement eco-friendly practices to minimize waste and conserve resources as part of our commitment to sustainability.

8. Community Engagement:

  • Participate in local events and engage with customers and the community to promote our brand and values.

9. Professional Development:

  • Attend workshops, seminars, or courses related to brewing for continuous professional development.

10. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work as part of a team with regular and effective communication.
  • Collaborate with the Restaurant General Manager for beer tastings and pairings.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for the company.

11. Responsiveness to ANBL and Key Licensee Customers:

  • Be responsive to the requirements of the ANBL (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of New Brunswick) and key licensee customers, ensuring compliance with their specific needs and standards.

12. Training and Succession Planning:

  • Actively train and mentor brew staff to facilitate succession planning and support the brewery's growth and expansion.

13. Long-Term Commitment:

  • Demonstrate a long-term commitment to our company and its mission, values, and vision.

14. Other Duties:

  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
