Job description

Shore Line Brewing Co. is looking for a full time, seasonal Head Brewer/Brewmaster to join our team. Coming up on our 4th anniversary, we continue to grow and upgrade our systems to enhance our product. We need someone who can hit the ground running, going into the busy spring/summer seasons. We have a fully operational kitchen and taproom to complement our 20 HL brewhouse, and we are located right across from Gyro Beach on Lakeshore Drive in Kelowna, B

Reporting directly to the Ownership and General Manager, the Head Brewer/ Brewmaster is responsible for all the brewing production activities, controlling costs, developing and executing the budget, sourcing ingredients, and leading all aspects of the brewing process, department and its staff. The Head Brewer will start with existing core brews that Shore Line has developed but also will be key in leading the creative direction of the Brewery. This is a full time, seasonal, salaried position. The desired candidate must have excellent organizational, leadership, planning and management skills. Must be able to work independently and live in or relocate to Kelowna, BC.

Expectations and key job responsibilities:

· Brewery Operations management

· Ensure the brewery is compliant with safety and environmental regulations.

· Adhere to the "Safety First" methodology.

· Manage/hire/mentor additional seasonal brewery staff when required

· Recipe research and development, formulation and production.

· Responsible for all sensory and laboratory work for products at every stage.

· Consistently ensure quality and efficiency across all brewery processes and production lines.

· Develop seasonal and specialty beer recipes and ensure they appeal to our specified market.

· Manage all aspects of inventory control and ordering.

· Control production costs and maximize efficiencies in all aspects of beer production, storage and transportation

· Troubleshooting and maintenance of brewery equipment.

· Maintain excellent communication & relationships with suppliers and vendors

· Prepare production, monthly inventory and quality assurance reports

· Your passion for beer shows in your daily work; interactions with staff, helping out front of house staff in training, sales staff, customers, and general public

· Hands-on, day to day work with our 20 hectoliter equipment

· Yeast management, dry hopping beer, daily fermentation, sanitary wort production, CIP, filtering and milling grains will all be a part of the program-Receive raw materials, and prepare products for shipments

· Perform product transfers and assist in managing inventory levels for taproom, storage and distribution

· Flexibility in hours will be required for the possibility of delivery runs and/or picking up materials cleaning tasks including handling chemicals safely and as per strict regulations, cleaning and filling kegs-Adherence to workplace safety and company sanitation practices-Keeping accurate records on quality control using brewery software-Have a key role in our canning production role

· Demonstrate creative and critical thinking, with troubleshooting skills

· Seek continuous improvement to drive efficiencies, streamline processes, and sanitation practices

· Maintain a spotless work environment

· We have a large system in a small space, with limited access and a unique setup. Managing work around equipment in tight spaces is a daily part of the job function which may involve more lifting and moving of equipment.

· Assisting in storing, transportation and delivery of product

· Maintaining draught system for taproom and additional location

· Assisting FOH with keg changes, and moving kegs when required

· Staff and sales team training, perform tastings and brewery tours from time to time

Qualifications and Skills:

· 3-5 years Industry experience with demonstrated knowledge and experience in Recipe formulation

· Formal Brewmaster/Brewery Operations certification from an accredited institution is a strong asset

· Good knowledge of yeast varieties, framing, propagation and yeast care handling system.

· Knowledge of keg and cask conditioned beer systems.

· Experience in selecting and buying hops, malt, yeast and other materials in a timely manner.

· Experience in flavour problem solving in the brewery;

· Experience in oxygen control systems during filtration and canning

· Up to date knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety Standards regulations

· Knowledge of Word, Excel and brewing software for brewing operations

· Excellent English oral and written communication skills.

· Direct brewing experience

· Ability to lift frequently lift 50-100 lbs lbs repeatedly sometimes over shoulder height and perform repetitive motions

· A strong operational background, mechanical inclination, demonstrates initiative, problem solving skills and interpersonal skills

· Positive attitude and ability to multitask

· Flexibility to work overtime and at variable times which may include weekends, late nights, early mornings and longer than 8 hours in a day

· Serving it Right certification or equivalent (Pro Serve, etc.)

· Class 5 Diver’s licence

· Job Type: Full-time/Seasonal work evenings and weekends as required
