Under the direction of the Head Start Manager, the Head Start Cook will prepare and plan nutritious, healthy meals that follow the Canada Food Guide Standards. The kitchen is to be managed and the work of the Cook is to be conducted in strict compliance with the Health department and other applicable legislation. The cook works in consultation with the Head Start manager to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen and its coordination with the other programs of the Centre.
· Previous cooking experience
· Familiarity with planning and implementing menus around the Canada Food Guide
· Strong communication skills
· Work independently and as a team player
· Hold an updated Food Safe Certificate
· Hold an updated First Aid Certificate
· Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
· Criminal Record Check for the vulnerable sector
· Ability to relate well to children, staff and parents is essential
· Tuberculosis Test
· Medical Clearance
· Planning of healthy and nutritious menus and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide
· Posting of monthly menus for parents and staff.
· Research for variety of healthy recipes
· Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen work areas in an organized, clean, sanitized, safe and hygienic condition at all times
· Maintain regular inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies
· Purchase all groceries to implement the planned menus, in consideration of the Head Start’s food budget and in consultation with the Head Start Manager
· Additional Cooking for Wellness Pillar events/programs upon request and subject to availability.
· Establish and maintain open communication with parents and staff regarding children’s dietary restrictions, allergies, etc.
Preference may be given to applicants of Indigenous Ancestry.
