Job description

Overview:
This position is located in Inuvik, NT.
Reporting to the Director of Health, Safety & Environment, work with a team of skilled workers, managers, and Health & Safety professionals to enhance NTPC’s Health & Safety Management System and foster an ever-strengthening culture of safety. Working in one of Canada’s most unique environments, visit communities across the Northwest Territories to conduct inspections, facilitate training, and support projects. Engage employees through guidance and coaching, developing safety leaders throughout the organization. Work together with all staff to ensure NTPC workplaces are safe and healthy for employees, contractors, and visitors.
Responsibilities:
  • Administer effective Health & Safety programs and provide technical expertise and guidance in the interpretation and application of Health & Safety legislation, regulations, rules, codes, standards, and industry best practices as they pertain to NTPC.
  • Liaise with regulators, industry representatives, and the public with regard to the Health & Safety Program through written correspondence, meetings, presentations, and other forms of verbal communication.
  • Coordinate and conduct incident investigations, analyses, reports, and followup, ensuring proper documentation and records management is completed.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to workers and Management to improve safety culture and performance.
  • Develop and facilitate orientation and training as a specialist in the elements of the Health and Safety Management System
  • Participate in the preparation of tenders and requests for proposals, in the pre-qualification of contractors, in the evaluation of proposals, in the selection of appropriate consultants and contractors, and in the evaluation of contractor safety performance.
Qualifications:
  • Occupational Health & Safety Degree AND five (5) years experience or related Diploma WITH seven (7) years of experience coordinating and supervising occupational Health & Safety programs, preferably in the public utility field. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT), a related certification, or commitment to obtain certification within two (2) years of employment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Strong leadership and coaching abilities.
  • Strong instructional, public speaking, and presentation skills to deliver and/or facilitate effective training.
  • Excellent computer skills including the ability to apply Microsoft programs (Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet, and other software applicable to the position.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills to conduct investigations and provide effective recommendations.
  • Well-rounded understanding of occupational Health & Safety fundamentals, principles, and related legislation with the ability to interpret this legislation in the context of policies and procedures.
  • Proficient in the application of NTPC, federal, provincial, and industry HSE legislation, regulations, codes, and standards in order to provide expert technical advice and direction to management and staff.
  • Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) required.
  • Must undergo a Successful Criminal Records Check
Salary for this position ranges from $52.18/hr - $63.40/hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $11,808 per annum.
