Job description

Position Summary:

The Health and Safety Coordinator supports the Health and Safety team and implements safety procedures and ensures employees comply with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Assessing confined spaces and issuing permits for confined space work
  • Manage confined space equipment
    • This includes conducting daily inspections and ensuring that all equipment is secured at the end of each shift
  • Act as a Confined Space Rescue Team Lead
    • This includes delegating work to Confined Space Rescue Team members, issuing radios, outlining the confined spaces being entered, and ensuring the correct rescue plan is in place
  • Perform workplace audits, investigations, and inspections to identify hazards and potential hazards in the workplace, and advise on preventative and corrective measures
  • Perform accident investigations in cases of workplace injuries, near misses, security incidents, and environmental concerns
  • Conduct hazard assessments for shipbuilding and ship repair projects
  • Issue Lock-out/Tag-out permits
  • Enforce Health and Safety rules on the worksite, and provide recommendations to the company to improve health and safety
  • Perform contractor orientation training
  • Issue hot work permits (including hazard assessments if required)
  • Conduct daily project inspections
  • Dispose of hazardous waste and track disposal
  • Act as the main First Aid attendant, ensuring that the proper paperwork is distributed to employees and that the First Aid room is fully stocked
  • Liaise and report to various government agencies regarding HSSE-related matters
  • Identify workplace requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure company compliance
  • Research, develop, and implement policies, programs, and procedures for Health, Safety, Security and Environment initiatives
  • Coordinate and conduct health and safety training programs
  • Assist in the Return-to-Work program

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Possess training Health & Safety, Security, Human Resources, or other relevant areas
  • Exceptional attention to detail with an ability to effectively balance multiple priorities
  • Adult teaching in Train-the-Trainer would be an asset for various programs
  • JHSC certification an asset
  • First Aid certification an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong team player with a positive attitude
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills
  • Marine experience or construction experience
  • Familiarity with confined space work an asset
  • Hazard identification and mitigation experience
  • Incident investigation experience
  • Experience liaising with government agencies such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, WSIB, etc.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety Insurance Board, etc.
  • Experience with Return-to-Work procedures
